Job Summary
Location: Various, United States
The person holding this position will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all power plant equipment and assist with maintenance tasks as assigned. This position reports to the Operations Supervisor.
Key Accountabilities
* Performs all station shift operation and maintenance, including startup and shutdown of main plant components and auxiliaries
* Perform operations in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures and job safety standards
* Respond to abnormalities and take corrective actions consistent with established operating procedures and good engineering practice
* Conducts routine tours of the plant to inspect equipment; record readings and provides feedback to other employees
* Complies with all site safety requirements and procedures. Identifies safety hazards and takes corrective actions as necessary
* Maintains accuracy of shift operating logs, records, time sheets, work orders and other administrative documents related to the power plant
* Performs routine cycle chemistry testing and makes the necessary adjustments to optimize efficiency. Checks daily consumption rates of chemicals, gasses, fuels, water, and other consumables; monitors inventories and initiates action to replenish when appropriate
* Performs plant switching and tagging of equipment in accordance with approved procedures and prudent operations and maintenance practices
* Performs electrical and mechanical inspections, troubleshooting, and maintenance tasks under direction of Management when assigned
* Investigates plant problems, incidents, accidents, and unusual events, and provides analyses, recommendations, reports, and appropriate follow-up plans
* Reads and records gauges and meters. Performs routine operational test and adjustments on all power plant systems and components, as required
* Develops, assists, and revises operations and maintenance related procedures
* Performs and maintains housekeeping standards and duties
* Performs routine preventive and predictive maintenance on all systems and equipment; supports corrective maintenance efforts on selected equipment when properly trained or supervised
* Becomes lead system representative on assigned systems
* Performs other duties necessary to fulfill plant requirements
* Displays routine proficiency improvements toward becoming qualified as an O&M Tech IV
* May be called upon to assist with the duties of the O&M Tech II
* Communicates with other company personnel on-site and at other locations. Represents the company in dealing with the public, steam and power customers, vendors, contractors, regulators, and other non-company personnel
* Assist other team members and works with all departments to support the operation in achieving its goals
* Willingness to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime and respond to off-hour call-ins

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
* A high school diploma or equivalent
* Two years of power plant experience in operations and maintenance, including knowledge of power plant mechanical and electrical equipment, including motors, pumps, boilers, fluid systems, chemical handling, water treatment systems, pollution control equipment, AC and DC electrical distribution and control systems, etc. and associated maintenance functions

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Senior PlantOperator is the responsible shift lead operator level classification in the PlantOperator series. Positions assigned to this class are expected to independently perform the full range of plantoperation and monitoring duties on an assigned shift. This class is distinguished from the next higher class of Supervising PlantOperator in that the latter is assigned full responsibility for drinking water or wastewater operations, including the direct supervision, technical and functional oversight, direction and coordination of all shifts on a 24-hour basis. This class is distinguished from the next lower class of PlantOperator in that the latter are journey-level positions not responsible for being the responsible shift lead operator.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
General supervision is provided by a Superintendent and/or the Supervising PlantOperator. Responsibilities require the technical and functional supervision and lead direction of lower-level plant personnel.EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Lead and participate in the operation, monitoring, and control of the City's combined wastewater control system, conventional surface water treatment plants, and outlying pumping stations on an assigned shift.
* Participate in and direct the operation of plant equipment including chemical feed, computer, and telemetry systems, microprocessors, pumps, flow control gates, and plant communications systems.
* Plan the operation of the City's entire potable water treatment and distribution system for an assigned shift including anticipating water demand, hour by hour, and adjusting plant influents, effluents and reservoir filling and drawing to maintain pressure in the distribution system within given parameters.
* Plan and schedule water treatment plant activities such as filter backwashes, sludge pumping, filter washwater recycling and other related activities.
* Monitor water quality during treatment process through visual inspection and the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and adjust influent flows, chemical dosages and filtration rates based on observations; take corrective action on problems identified including hazardous or toxic material spills that affect water supplies.
* Coordinate and maintain wastewater pumping operations in conjunction with the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.
* Monitor and inspect plant equipment and respond to treatment process and equipment alarms.
* Monitor the condition and functional capabilities of automated and manual plant equipment and machinery; direct and perform minor preventive maintenance and recommend maintenance, repair, and replacement of plant equipment as necessary.
* Assess and gauge flow rates during inclement weather and determine when to direct storm water and personnel to various storage and disposal locations; determine timing and degree to which operations should be activated and deactivated.
* Perform and interpret standardized water quality tests such as chlorine residual, pH, turbidity, alkalinity, total suspended solids, settleable solids, chlorine residual, pH, dissolved oxygen and jar tests, and calculate and make dosage and related chemical feed equipment adjustments based upon the results from such tests.
* Perform efficiency tests on pumps, compressors, and related equipment.
* Monitor the status of plant pumping and equipment, using technical information such as main pressure, system pressure, wet well elevation, water elevations, electrical system voltages, pump motor voltages, and computer system outputs.
* Direct and coordinate trash screen cleaning, filters, and related work involving the upkeep of plant facilities.
* Maintain and update plantoperation logs and records.
* Use Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and computerized maintenance management systems.
* Maintain and replenish materials and supplies necessary for plantoperation.
* Operate equipment such as engine driven pumps, generators, compressors, hoists, forklifts, cranes and other heavy equipment.
* Schedule and coordinate the work of assigned plantoperation personnel.
* Train and assist less experienced personnel in plantoperations; ensure that proper safety practices are followed.
* Work in confined spaces, on temporary scaffolding, and on high structures; using breathing apparatus and/or Level I Hazmat suits.
* Other related duties may also be performed; not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual holding this classification.Knowledge of:
* Operating principles, methods, equipment, supplies, and materials used in the combined wastewater control system, drinking water treatment plants, wells, and pumping stations.

Certificate:

Work Performed:

Maintains, repairs, and operates . Steam, Compressed Air, Heating Hot Water generation and distribution, Facility fire protection systems and Site Air Emission. Will also be required to perform boiler surveillance as well as performing shop maintenance and clean up.
Work assignments include welding, carpentry, metal work and fabrication.
Maintains a clean work environment in the chemical plant, shop, grounds, etc., as well as any areas worked in.
May assist other crafts as required under the direction of primary craft.
The starting hourly rate for this position is $48.19 (plus shift differential). This is a union position. We are a 24/7/365 manufacturing plant and candidate must be open to all shifts including weekends and holidays.
