Responsibilities
Conducts multidisciplinary research and collaborates with equipment designers and/or hardware engineers in the planning, design, development, and utilization of electronic data processing systems for product and commercial software

The Engineer - Automation Engineering will work as a member of the Automation Engineering Department at Eli Lilly, Foundry. The engineer will provide automation support for one or more operating areas across site and/or for capital projects. Process Automation is core to delivering a right first time facility start up and continued support of ongoing manufacturing operations into the future.
The Engineer is also responsible for the productivity and mentorship of the employees with the purpose of ensuring that reliable and compliant control applications and systems are used in the manufacturing at Foundry. Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or related field.

Basic to intermediate proficiency in C# or similar control/automation programming languages.
Strong understanding of electrical circuits, sensors, and wiring practices.
Mechanical aptitude ability to understand equipment structures and perform hands-on assembly work.
Proven ability to troubleshoot problems across automation, electrical, and mechanical domains.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment.
Preferred
Experience in semiconductor, battery, automotive, or industrial automation equipment.
Familiarity with industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, ProfiNet, Modbus).
Experience with motion control systems, robotics, or vision systems.
Knowledge of safety systems and risk assessments (e-stops, interlocks, guarding).
Prior experience installing and commissioning automation equipment.

The Lead Automation Engineer will work across a variety of functional groups that are directly involved in engineering, product development, and implementation. The ideal candidate is an inventive problem solver that can work through technical challenges and employing pragmatic solutions within our technical and maintenance departments.
Responsibilities:
Automation Strategy and Leadership
Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of automation systems across manufacturing operations.
Serve as the technical authority for PLCs, HMIs, robotics, vision systems, and industrial networks.
Maintain accurate electrical schematics, network diagrams, and software backups.
System Design & Implementation
Design control systems including PLC logic, HMI screens, safety circuits, and network architecture.
Lead new equipment integration, upgrades, and retrofits.
Specify hardware and software for automation projects (PLCs, drives, sensors, safety devices).
Oversee system commissioning, startup, and validation.
Troubleshooting & Reliability
Act as escalation support for complex automation and controls issues.
Perform root cause analysis on equipment failures related to controls, software, or networks.
Team Leadership & Development
Mentor and guide automation engineers, controls technicians, maintenance staff, and engineering interns.
Project Management
Lead automation-focused capital projects from concept through handoff.
Develop project scopes, timelines, budgets, and risk assessments.
Coordinate with engineering, maintenance, operations, safety, IT, and vendors.
Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to specification.
Select, manage, and evaluate automation vendors and system integrators.
Review and approve vendor designs, FAT/SAT documentation, and deliverables.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
Identify opportunities for automation to improve efficiency, quality, and ergonomics.
Evaluate emerging automation technologies and recommend adoption where beneficial.
Support data collection and OEE improvements.
Work closely with maintenance to improve troubleshooting capability and ownership.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering.
5-10+ years of experience in industrial automation or controls engineering.
Strong expertise in PLCprogramming, HMIs, and industrial networking.
Experience with machine safety systems and applicable codes/standards.
Direct experience using 3D modeling software.
Proven ability to lead projects and provide technical mentorship.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with robotics, vision systems, and data integration.
Rockwell Automation-Allen Bradley programming/product experience.
Prior leadership or lead engineer experience in a manufacturing environment.
Familiarity with vendor management and system integrator oversight.
