About the Role: The Mechanical Design Engineer is a hands-on engineering role focused on the design, development, and support of food processing equipment and custom machinery. This position requires strong machine design experience with augers, mixers, conveyors, and power transmission systems, as well as the ability to work within established processes while contributing to long-term improvements. The role also involves mentoring junior engineers and supporting manufacturing through the full equipment lifecycle.
Responsibilities:
Design and develop mechanical systems and food processing equipment including augers, mixers, belt conveyors, chain and sprocket drives, and related assemblies using SolidWorks.
Apply mechanical engineering principles to machine design, equipment development, and custom project execution.
Perform mechanical analysis including load calculations, stress and strain evaluation, and component sizing to ensure safe and reliable designs.
Create, document, and release detailed engineering drawings, assemblies, bills of material, and purchased part specifications.
Support manufacturing activities from design through fabrication, assembly, testing, and commissioning.
Collaborate with manufacturing, purchasing, and suppliers to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with project timelines.
Apply knowledge of food manufacturing equipment, sanitary design principles, and good manufacturing practices in all designs.
Work effectively within existing procedures while helping identify and implement future design and process improvements.
Mentor and support junior engineers and designers through technical guidance and hands-on knowledge sharing.
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience in machine design and manufacturing.
5 or more years of mechanical engineering experience in machine design, industrial equipment, or food processing environments.
Demonstrated experience designing food processing machinery such as augers, mixers, conveyors, and power transmission systems.
Strong working knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, vacuum systems, and mechanical power transmission.
Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assemblies, and production drawings.
Working knowledge of machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, forming, and mechanical assembly processes.
Understanding of food manufacturing requirements, sanitary design principles, and regulatory standards.
Strong problem-solving ability, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to work independently from written or verbal requirements.
Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams.

Check formal contract change orders against request. Process and return to general contractor. Update job contract and estimate in accounting system.

Prepare monthly billings, lien releases and required paperwork for the billing process. Enter invoices in accounting system in the correct fiscal period. Track payments and make collection calls within 45 days of issuance of invoice.
Prepare monthly projection reports to review with project manager. Make corrections to contract and estimate amounts within required due date.
Request and follow-up on O&M manuals from vendors and subcontractors. Prepare the warranty statement. Assemble close out package and submit to general contractor and service by the required due dates.
Close jobs and set up warranty jobs with expiration dates and estimated costs.
Answer calls for project manager and handle issues when possible.
All clerical duties, correspondence, typing, filing, faxing, deliveries, mailing, copying and attending and scheduling meetings.
Regular and predictable attendance is expected in order to meet the requirements of this position.

BASIC REQUIREMENT:
Degree: Professional Engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

Combination of education and experience: College-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
1. Professional Registration: Current registration as a professional engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. 2. Written Test: Evidence of having successfully passed the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination, or the written test required for professional registration, which is administered by the Boards of Engineering Examiners in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
3. Specified Academic Courses: Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements. The courses must be fully acceptable toward meeting the requirements of a professional engineering curriculum.
4. Related Curriculum: Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
