ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Leads the creation and refinement of substation design standards, specifications, and guidelines covering physical layouts, electrical systems, grounding, protection schemes, and SCADA integration.
Performs and reviews complex engineering analyses to support standardization efforts, including fault analysis, bus and cable sizing, grounding system design, and lightning protection.
Ensures all standards align with applicable codes (IEEE, NESC, NEC), utility requirements, and environmental regulations.
Evaluates new technologies, equipment, and materials for inclusion in standard practices, balancing innovation with reliability and cost-effectiveness.
Collaborates with engineering, operations, procurement, and construction teams to ensure standards are practical, scalable, and field-tested.
Maintains and manages a centralized repository of engineering standards, templates, and reference documentation.
Provides technical leadership during audits, quality reviews, and compliance assessments.
Mentors and guides junior engineers and standards staff, fostering technical growth and consistency in application.
Represents the utility in industry working groups, technical committees, and regulatory forums.
Monitors industry trends, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies to proactively update standards and practices.
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree with a major in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or relevant, equivalent experience and/or education.
Minimum of six (6) years of work experience in related area(s) for Senior Engineer level.
Power system coursework preferred for electrical engineering majors.
Utility experience preferred.
Possess sound analytical, problem-solving and documentation skills.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors and individuals inside and outside the Company.
Ability to multi-task and work under minimal supervision, in a team environment.
Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
Ability to learn and utilize job specific software.

As a mechanical engineer on the Industrial team, you will be collaborating with multi-discipline teams within the Iowa City Office and across the entire Shive-Hattery organization on local, regional, and national projects. We are a full-service design firm offering architecture, interior design, engineering, and landscape architecture. In this role, you will lead the mechanical design and project management efforts for projects serving primarily industrial clients with opportunities to work on pharmaceutical, education, commercial, and government projects.:
You will lead the mechanical design of building systems to include plumbing, heating, cooling, ventilation, fire protection, building automation, and industrial process systems.
Work in a team setting, collaborating with other disciplines to perform the design and construction administration services for projects of all sizes.
Attend project and client meetings with design professionals for projects under contract and for business development opportunities.
Establish and manage the mechanical scope, schedule, and budget.
Provide direction to less experienced engineers and designers assisting with project work.
Oversee the completion and quality of construction drawings, specifications, reports, and other project documentation.
Mentor and teach other team members.
Visit project sites and provide technical assistance to help resolve construction issues.

Requirements:
Graduate of an accredited engineering school with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or architectural engineering with a mechanical emphasis.
8+ years of experience in the mechanical design of building systems.
Experience leading the mechanical design for projects.
Registration as a licensed Mechanical Professional Engineer is a requirement.

Manage time and workload effectively which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to engineering detail.
