POSITION SPECIFICS The Electro-Optics Center (EOC), located in Freeport PA, a Division in the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University, is seeking a Photonics Research and Development Engineer with expertise in Optical Communications, supporting military and intelligence community customers. You Will: Perform research and development tasks in optical communications. Description: Primarily responsible for providing expert knowledge and leadership in the development, application, and deployment of advanced materials and material processing technologies, utilizing an understanding of materials thermodynamics, materials thermal processing fundamentals, and ferrous metallurgy. Specific duties include: * Conceives, plans, and executes projects working either alone or in collaboration with others to address the needs of the business units or corporate centers. Takes a lead role in collaborative effort to solve complex problems while requiring novel approaches that leverage and/or further advanced engineering research in metallurgy and materials science. (40%); * Interacts proactively with product development, sales, marketing, and manufacturing. Leads activities with outside vendors and suppliers to accomplish project goals. (30%); * Provides guidance and advice to management to change direction in an existing program or project as warranted by scientific or technological development. (10%); * Acts as a mentor to other associates, helping them to develop excellent technical, problem solving, and leadership skills. (10%); * Serves as a technical expert for the company in the development and application of advanced materials and associated processing technologies. (10%) Requirements: * Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Materials Science or similar field and 24 months of experience in a Materials Engineer or similar position. * Experience must include expertise in corrosion testing and materials characterization using SEM-EDS and XRD.
