This gift will fund the construction of a new research building and the creation of three new faculty positions, along with new staff and graduate student positions. We seek to assemble an outstanding team of faculty to seize this opportunity and conduct research on laminitis, a painful and crippling disease of horses. The new team will consist of one faculty member at the professor level, one at the associate professor level, and one at the assistant professor level. The new 14,000-square-foot facility will offer both clinical and benchtop research space, as well as the equipment needed for advanced research. Graduate student stipends will be available to each faculty member, and a substantial amount of funding will be available to the team annually for research on the prevention and treatment of laminitis in pleasure or working horses. We seek applicants for the position of Associate Research Professor of Biomedical Sciences in Laminitis Research. This position is supported by a gift and a higher salary will be offered. Time allocations for this position are 90% research and 10% academic service, teaching, or clinical service, depending upon the individual's interests and expertise. Percentages can be adjusted according to the faculty member's professional interests. The DCBS is home to 19 faculty, 25 staff and 28 graduate students engaged in research, teaching and service, with most faculty primarily focused on research. Current research strengths within the department include environmental toxicology, represented by the Center for Environmental Health Sciences, aquaculture, infectious diseases, and immunology. In addition to research, faculty in the DCBS are involved in the management and delivery of the first year of the veterinary curriculum, and members of the department play key roles in a program designed to provide veterinary students with a high-quality research experience in the summer. Faculty in the department are also actively involved in providing classes and training activities for graduate students. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for collecting and processing uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) and satellite data, ensuring that data meets the specific requirements of researchers working in conservation, natural resource management, and agriculture, while also advancing the integration of cutting-edge data analysis techniques in these fields. • Collaborate with external stakeholders such as federal agencies, NGOs, and private sector partners to co-produce research with practical applications in agriculture, natural resource management, geosystems and geospatial intelligence, and climate adaptation. • Identify, integrate, and evaluate emerging technologies, such as GeoAI, sensor networks, and cloud-based geospatial data infrastructures, to advance research scalability and impact. • Perform interdisciplinary research with a focus on machine learning applications in agriculture and/or natural resources. • Document project results in reports. • Disseminate research results via conference proceedings, journal manuscripts, and other interactive and engaging media. • Present project results to peers, program managers, and the public. • Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: • PhD in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a closely related field; candidates with a PhD in natural resources, geography, or agricultural fields with demonstrated competency in machine learning and data analysis will also be considered. • Extensive knowledge in machine learning and data analysis. • Working knowledge of geospatial analysis and concepts, including but not limited to experience in processing and analyzing geospatial data from satellites, UASs, and remote sensing platforms. • Some knowledge of agricultural processes, agricultural practices, and/or natural resources • Demonstrated ability in developing manuscripts and presentations using Microsoft Office (MSWord and PowerPoint). • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB, and experience with high-performance computing environments. • Ability to accomplish research independently. • Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary teams. • Legally eligible to work in the United States. Together with NOAA and in support of their strategic plan, NGI conducts research on interconnections among Gulf of Mexico environments, habitats, resources, and people and engages in outreach to help others learn about and make decisions based on these interconnections. The 35-member faculty within the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Aquaculture leads one of the most productive research programs in the Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University. The Department is well-known for its highly collegial and interdisciplinary faculty, post-doctoral fellows, research and extension associates that help make the Department one of the premier institutions for applied wildlife and fisheries science in the nation. As one of the fastest growing undergraduate programs in the region, our 300 undergraduate students have concentrations in wildlife agriculture science, human-wildlife interactions, conservation biology, wildlife veterinary medicine, conservation law enforcement, and wildlife, fisheries and aquaculture science. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The successful candidates will support the MSU Extension Gamebird Program by: • Assisting with capture, banding, and GPS marking of waterfowl (primarily mallards) and other gamebirds • Maintaining field equipment (e.g., rocket nets, cameras, telemetry receivers) • Managing GPS tracking data and assisting with database organization • Participating in field days, landowner workshops, and Extension events • Developing and distributing educational content (e.g., social media posts, podcasts, videos) • Supporting applied research efforts and outreach products (e.g., management guides, newsletters) • Communicating with agency partners, private landowners, and the hunting community • Occasionally supervising part-time or seasonal staff and volunteers Minimum Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Science, Biology, Forestry, Ecology, Natural Resources, or a closely related field • Valid U.S. driver's license Rank and salary will be commensurate with education and experience. Preferred Qualifications: • M.S. degree in wildlife, conservation, or a related discipline • Experience capturing, handling, or marking wild birds (e.g., waterfowl or gamebirds) • Experience with field data collection and natural resource outreach Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • Strong organizational and project management skills • Strong communication skills and ability to work with diverse partners • Ability and willingness to travel in state • Knowledge of conservation delivery programs or farm bill practices • Familiarity with GPS telemetry equipment, data processing, or R/GIS workflows • Experience developing social media or educational content (e.g., video, photo, graphics) • Experience working independently and as part of a collaborative team • Ability to work in flooded or remote field conditions • Knowledge of applied conservation, hunting traditions, and private lands outreach • Ability to communicate with and educate a range of stakeholders, including landowners, producers, and agency personnel. Working Conditions and Physical Effort This position requires regular fieldwork in challenging outdoor environments including wetlands and agricultural fields. Candidates must be willing to work in wetland and agricultural landscapes, under varied weather conditions, and on irregular schedules (including early mornings, evenings, and weekends). Overnight travel is expected during peak field seasons. Physical effort, including lifting heavy equipment and long hours in waders, will be required. Travel throughout Mississippi and occasional overnight stays are expected. The position may include some weekend or evening work, particularly during the peak field season (fall and winter months). Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., with one often to the point of being objectionable. Injuries may require professional treatment. Job frequently requires standing, walking, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Job occasionally requires sitting, reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping/kneeling/crouching/ crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
