POSITION SUMMARY
Performs a variety of laboratory tests on blood, tissue and body fluids using both automated and manual methods. Ensures accurate, timely reporting of lab test results in order to assist medical staff in patient care. Serves as a technical resource and performs section supervisory functions.
Education:
Required: Bachelor's Degree from an approved college or university and/or graduate of an accredited school of medical technology, or equivalent such as military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489, or have qualified at the Medical Technologist level by achieving a satisfactory grade on a HHS examination or equivalent prior to 2/28/92 42 CFR 493.1491. To this end, New College of Florida was recognized in October 2025 for its efforts on American civic literacy and rewarded with a $1.78 million federal grant to celebrate America at 250. This postdoctoral fellowship is directly supported by the grant, which runs from October 2025 to July 2028. New College of Florida's America at 250 initiative will promote civic education and collaboration between grade 5-12 teachers and students and prominent scholars in political science, history, philosophy, economics, and other fields related to American civics.
New College of Florida invites recent Ph.D. recipients (within the last three years) or recipients who anticipate receiving their Ph.D. to apply for appointments as America at 250 Postdoctoral Fellows for the period February 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027 with the possibility of renewal. Project Overview:
We are seeking two highly motivated individuals to join our team as a Project Manager and Postdoctoral Researcher, contributing to both the scientific and operational success of a major research initiative focused on hydrology and water quality in Florida's coastal watersheds. Your responsibilities include managing daily research operations, coordinating research activities, developing watershed water quality models, identifying water quality "hotspots", and developing effective mitigation strategies. You will ensure that all work is conducted efficiently, ethically, and in compliance with institutional policies, research protocols, and regulatory guidelines. You will also coordinate with fellow researchers, oversee participant involvement, manage data workflows, and maintain project timelines and budgets. Throughout the project, you will apply hydro-informatics, GIS mapping, and water quality modeling techniques to address complex environmental challenges. You will work closely with Dr. Seneshaw Tsegaye, Chair of the Department of Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering, along with other FGCU researchers. Dr. Tsegaye, who also holds the Backe Chair for Sustainable Water Research at the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering, brings 15 years of expertise in integrated urban water management, hydrology and water quality modeling, GIS for sustainable development, water-sensitive urban design, and flood resilience. JOB DUTIES:
The incumbent serves as a quality assurance biosafety coordinator for the Bronson Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (BADDL). This position will coordinate with the laboratory director, Quality Assurance Manager (QAM), and BADDL staff to ensure that BADDL meets The American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) accreditation standards.
Serve as the backup to the QAM.
Assist the QAM in the Quality Assurance program of the bureau.
Ensure continuous improvement through an ongoing effort to improve laboratory services and processes.
Provide advice, resources, and assistance to BADDL personnel for all aspects of the quality system.
Assist in the implementation of the laboratory internal audit program. Including participating in and serving as lead auditor. Communicate audit findings with section personnel and laboratory director. Generate audit reports and any corrective actions that may arise from audit findings.
Review, revise, control, and distribute documents within the quality system.
Assist in and lead quality assurance and biosafety training sessions for laboratory personnel.
Review feedback from customers, generate customer complaints and initiate convective action when necessary.
Assist in the implementation of the biomedical waste and hazardous chemical waste programs.
Coordinate annual maintenance, calibration, and certification of laboratory-wide equipment and biological safety cabinets.
Monitor and evaluating internal processes including test results to determine their quality. Initiate the corrective action process when non-conforming work is identified.
Gather data and present QA reports at the annual BADDL Management meeting and other venues as appropriate.
Works closely with Laboratory director on NAHLN (National Animal Health Laboratory Network) and Vet-LIRN (Veterinary Laboratory Investigative Response Network) activities and projects.
Assist as a Biological Scientist for the microbiology section. The incumbent is responsible for conducting and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of diagnostic testing within the microbiology section. Procedures include: Nucleic acid extraction, bacterial culture and identification, polymerase chain reaction, antibody detection, cell culture, and virus isolation.
Participates in internal and external proficiency testing programs to ensure compliance with accreditation standards and maintain the integrity of laboratory results.
Process and distributes samples received in the microbiology sections, meeting Quality Assurance (QA) procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Prepare and maintain accurate, detailed laboratory records of results, and ensures case coordination of the test results.
Manage the Microbiology laboratory supplies. Determines the supplies that are necessary for full laboratory function and places orders for laboratory supplies. This responsibility includes ensuring that balances, pipettes, pH meters, bio-safety hoods, microscopes, and other similar items are calibrated and maintained in compliance with Quality Assurance Guidelines.
Keep the Microbiology Department Head and supervisor properly informed of the activities of the Section including any potential or real problem that may affect the proper function of the laboratory.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Position Overview and Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will serve as an OPS Biological Scientist I within FWC's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, Wildlife Research Section / Reptile, Amphibian, and Terrestrial Invertebrate Research Subsection. Their primary duties will be to assist staff scientists with ongoing research projects focused on rare and at-risk species. Specifically, the selected candidate will assist with ongoing research focused on at-risk dragonfly conservation, though there may be opportunities to assist with other tasks/projects. This is a predominantly field-based position and, as such, will require working outdoors in various and often unpleasant conditions that may include: heat, cold, rain, high winds, and exposure to stinging/biting insects (including ticks and mosquitoes). This position will require frequent travel throughout north-central/northeast Florida to access study sites and will sometimes require working weekends and holidays. No overnight travel is anticipated. This is a seasonal, temporary position not expected to exceed four months. Anticipated start date: March 6, 2026.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
Collect biological, ecological, and environmental data using standardized protocols.
Operate radio telemetry equipment to monitor wildlife populations.
Safely operate 4WD vehicles to access study sites.
Perform other associated tasks as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of: (1) standard methods of data collection and management; and (2) general principles of ecology and conservation biology. Ability to: (1) identify, capture, and handle small animals (specifically dragonflies), (2) collect biological, ecological, and environmental data using standardized protocols (3) safely operate 4WD vehicles to access study sites (and maintain a valid driver license), (4) safely navigate in remote areas without cellular reception, (5) work independently without direct supervision, (6) work on a sometimes irregular schedule for extended hours in various field conditions, and (7) maintain positive, respectful relationships with coworkers, partners, and members of the public.
