POSITION SUMMARY
Under direction of Unit Manager, Director of Nursing and/or Administrator, is responsible for the evaluation, treatment, and care of residents with breathing disorders. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conducts physician prescribed treatments of a routine nature operating Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB) Machine, various oxygen devices, nebulizer and ultrasonic nebulizer in order to administer prescribed medicinal vapors and gases, humidity, and various oxygen concentrations to resident's respiratory system.
With appropriate authorizations, performs arterial puncture, operates blood gas analyzer measuring and determining acid-base balance efficiency of ventilation, and metabolism of respiratory system.
Monitors resident's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes, and consults with physician if adverse reactions occur.
Performs chest physical therapy treatments involving percussion, postural drainage, and suctioning in order to mobilize secretions and mucus in lungs and to clear airway blockage in respiratory system.
Performs pulmonary function studies determining volume, distribution, and movement of air in respiratory system.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & QUALIFICATIONS

The Registered Respiratory Therapist is a multi-skilled health professional who works interdependently with other health care professionals to provide quality health care to the patient. The Registered Respiratory Therapist is educated and trained to perform both administrative and clinical skills in the medical care environment.
Work Schedule:
Contract RRTs shall be expected to be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. The normal tour of duty is comprised of six 12-hour shifts, and one 8-hour shift amounting to eighty hours per 2-week period. Shift 8 hours or longer shall include a 30-minute meal break. Overtime shall be approved in writing (email) and permitted by the COR prior to any Contract RRT exceeding eighty (80) hours per two (2) week period.
Compensation: The expected pay at time of requisition creation is between $55-$58 an hour.
Primary Responsibilities
Assist with Intubations and other simple procedures. (i.e.: Bronchoscopies, thoracentesis, chest tube placement)
Be familiar with multiple Mechanical Ventilators and have proficiency in ventilation management.
Draw and analyze Arterial Blood Gasses (ABGs) and be able to interpret with the ability to assess and adjust patient modality per ABG results.
Discuss patient care plans, treatment plans and other pertinent care information with Physicians and other patient care providers (i.e. Physician assistants, Nurse
practitioners)
Maintain, operate and adjust with both invasive and non-invasive ventilator machines to
include portable CPAP and Bi-level machines.
Provide education for patients, caregivers, and family members pertinent to their
treatment plan while admitted or upon discharge.
Utilize Handheld Nebulizers; Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB) Treatments.
Administer medications to the respiratory tract, including Bronchodilators, decongestants, wetting agents, mucous emulsifying agents, and steroids
Perform PFTs and/or Spirometry Tests.
Provide direct and indirect treatment through assessing patient status and determining priorities, in any areas of assignment within VALBHS.
Comply with the VALBHS standard operating procedures and policies. Guidelines are in the form of oral and written instructions using standard operating procedures in the
planning of prescribed treatments. Additional materials such as technical manuals, textbooks, and reference books are available for review

American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
certification.

Instruct patients on the proper use of therapeutic equipment used for Obstructive Sleep Apnea and other home ventilatory support systems.
Process referrals to other sleep entities and healthy living providers.
Assists in the planning, development and implementation of respiratory care programs that coordinate high quality, cost-effective care for patients with COPD, hypoventilation, neuro-muscular disease, Sleep Apnea and all other sleep disorders.
Collaborates with managers, physicians and patient care staff to identify and resolve Sleep Disorder issues as well as Pulmonary Care Issues.
Conduct follow up consultations with CPAP users to ensure adherence or refer patients to alternative treatment.
Inform patients of the sleep physicians final results.
Provide case manager consultations to patients referred by the physicians.

Assesses patients need for respiratory care by validating physician orders, interviewing patients, performing assessments, and provide appropriate recommendations. Initiates and conducts therapeutic procedures, evaluates treatment efficacy, and modifies prescribed therapeutic procedures. Provides emergency care, including airway management, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Performs cardiopulmonary diagnostic procedures, calculates test results, analyzes specimens to detect abnormalities or specimen integrity issues, and evaluates implications of test results. Participates in department and hospital wide performance improvement initiatives.
Maintains, cleans, and calibrates equipment and instruments according to manufacturer instructions for use and hospital policy, to ensure safety, integrity and accuracy for patient use. Follows appropriate procedures for notification and removal of non-functional/unsafe equipment.
Evaluates all clinical data to determine the appropriateness of the prescribed respiratory care, participates in the development of the respiratory care plan, and provides care using clinical protocols. Job Summary
* Responsible for administering safe and competent respiratory care as ordered per physician, monitoring mechanical ventilation, administering medications, patient assessment, understanding ramifications of hemodynamic monitoring, understanding blood work results, monitoring, teaching, and training.
Essential Functions
* Competent delivery of Respiratory Care procedures in all areas of the hospital as outlined in the Respiratory Care policies, procedures and protocols
* Maintain accurate and complete documentation and charge capture of all Respiratory Care procedures
* Develop, document and maintain respiratory care elements of the patient plan of care
* Verify and initiate all physician orders for Respiratory Care
* Demonstrate competency and working knowledge of all Respiratory Care instruments and equipment
* Perform troubleshooting, problem resolution and proper disinfection/sterilization
* Initiate, monitor and maintain oxygen/aerosol delivery devices and non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation devices
* Perform effective airway management including oral/nasal airway placement, bag/mask ventilation, intubation and/or intubation assistance, emergent and scheduled tracheostomy tube changes
* Demonstrate safe and appropriate suction techniques and use of artificial airways

Licenses/Certifications
