**Responsibilities**
A respiratory therapist provides assessment, treatment, and monitoring of cardiopulmonary disease across the continuum of care. A respiratory therapist functions as part of an interdisciplinary team that coordinates and provides continuity of care in a financially responsible manner. A respiratory therapist is able to quickly and accurately assess a patient's condition and communicates effectively to the care team concerning changes in patient's condition, results of diagnostic studies, symptomatology, and response to treatment.

The Respiratory Therapist job requires graduation from an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy and basic computer literacy. Good verbal and written communication skills required. Function with initiative and independent judgment, Desire for continuous quality improvement. Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy or healthcare related field is preferred. Previous hospital experience preferred. Additional NBRC specialty credentials preferred. All respiratory therapists will hold the National Board for Respiratory Care entry level certification (CRT) prior to their first day of Mayo employment. All graduate respiratory therapists must possess valid permission (permanent or temporary permit) to practice with the licensing board in the state of hire prior to their first day of Mayo employment. The Registered Respiratory Therapist credential is required upon hire or by the end of one year of employment and must be maintained throughout employment. Basic Life Support certification is required upon hire or within 90 days from date of hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or equivalent determined by site is required upon hire or within 6 months from date of hire. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) where applicable. Additional life support certifications may be required by site of hire. All required certifications must be maintained throughout employment.

Assesses, diagnoses and treats patients suffering from cardiopulmonary respiratory disorders. Under the direction of a physician, educates patients and staff regarding chronic and acute pulmonary disorders, provides consultative services to area hospitals/agencies, and provides technical and educational support to nurses regarding respiratory procedures.

* Manages airway appropriately to include positioning, securing, humidification selection and suctioning.

* Provides care for the physical needs of patients by executing various respiratory care concepts to maximize performance, which includes positioning, physiology, procedure preparation, and technical factors. Modifies technical factors to achieve desired results and recognizes complications / limitations associated with certain procedures. Proactively identifies how to address these for optimum outcomes.
* Uses peer-to-peer accountability to contribute towards improving department score for patient satisfaction
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Troubleshoots, calibrates and performs preventive maintenance and quality control on all equipment and analyzers per department guidelines, documenting activities. Assembles, prepares, cleans and operates bronchoscopy equipment, monitoring equipment and accessories in accordance with manufacturing recommendations and department guidelines. Reports malfunctions.
* Provides direct assistance to physicians, performing tests as ordered, assessing and assuring quality, acceptability and reliability of results; takes corrective action and involves others as needed toward achievement of this end.
* Contributes to identification of corrective action and improvement activities and to meet department and hospital targets for quality and safety, focusing on the task at hand and reporting near misses, and inputting errors promptly into Patient Safety Net to improve processes and identify trends.

* Up to $3,000 Sign-On Bonus Respiratory Therapist Respiratory Care 0.60 FTE, 48 Hours a Pay Period Days, Hours between 6 am - 6 pm or 7 am - 7 pm Weekends: Every Third Weekend Holidays: Every Third Holiday The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for the performance of respiratory therapy and associated diagnostics to patients and residents in the inpatient, outpatient, and long-term care settings. Carries out the responsibilities and duties of a Respiratory Therapist and performs all modalities of respiratory therapy care common to the field, according to established plans of care and at the direction of the treating provider.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
* Duties include maintaining knowledge in all equipment pertaining to respiratory care and the ability to operate them efficiently, ventilators included.
* Must be able to interpret blood gases and adjust therapy accordingly.
* Must be able to perform tracheostomy tube changes, and conduct electrocardiograms.
* Must be able to operate other clinical equipment in the care of patients. Care/equipment may include, but is not limited to: suction and pulmonary function testing.
* Maintains, cleans, calibrates, and assesses the proper function of all equipment in the department.
* Effectively educates and communicates with patients and their family members, concerns regarding their respiratory-related disease process, and the proper use of related equipment/medication.
* Participates in and supports continuous improvement initiatives.
* Other job duties as assigned.

Skills and Experience:
Required:
* Requires a Bachelor's or Associate Degree through an accredited school of respiratory care
* Requires Registry by National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) and Minnesota State Registration
* Must obtain BLS, NRP, ACLS, and PALS certificate within first year in the position
* Must be competent in all respiratory therapy treatments including, but not limited to: nebulizer, ventilator use and maintenance, Acapella, ECG completion, pulmonary function testing, EEG testing, tracheotomy care, MDI use and instruction, spirometry, oxygen administration, and assessments
* Basic computer skills: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, & Cerner
Preferred:
* Previous respiratory care experience is preferred, but not required
