If you have extensive experience and proven expertise in sales or marketing, you might want to consider a career as a sales and marketing consultant. As a sales and marketing consultant, your job is to help organizations improve their sales and marketing operations by analyzing their current processes, developing strategies for improvement, and facilitating the implementation of these new strategies.

However, there is more to it than that. Your duties will also include gathering data from sales and marketing teams (as well as other relevant departments), conducting research outside and inside of the company, and coordinating with managers to determine the causes of gaps or the lack of progress.

Nevertheless, the job of a sales and marketing consultant is a lucrative one, like most other consultancy jobs. If you want to become a sales and marketing consultant, you must have a degree in business, marketing, communications, or other relevant fields. More than that, you must have at least five or more years of experience to prove your credibility to clients.

What general advice would you give to a sales and marketing consultant?

Be flexible. Companies are seeking marketing grads who can fit into many roles, particularly customer service and sales. You may not get a marketing communication job right out of college, but you may certainly be qualified for an entry-level sales job that leads to an internal marketing position.
