Checks for appropriate clinical information and expected date. Checks orders for procedural contraindications. Performs all Ultrasound procedures using independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathological findings. Analyses sonograms, synthesizing sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician. Imaging quality is acceptable by quality control standard to include all protocol requirement. Stays abreast of organizational, affiliate and departmental changes/updates by checking email on each shift. Explains procedure to patient and introduces self and identifies department. Greets patients professionally. Guides patients to appropriate areas. Ensures patients are in correct area for their procedure. Informs patients and their family members of all delays (including estimated wait time). Maintains patient and their family's comfort as best as possible (warm blankets, extra pillows, etc.) Arranges for interdepartmental transportation service, using correct area ID's. Transporting patients if necessary; especially patients to and from the radiology observation area and/or the emergency department. Obtains appropriate supplies and prepares room for patient. Maintains a sanitary and organized environment. Stock work area with linens/supplies as needed, reporting voids. Complies with departmental downtime protocols. Charges procedure and supplies when exam is completed. Adds charges when appropriate. Assists in maintaining an empty list of outstanding charges, investigates and / or reports, and explains reason for charges listed as outstanding. Help troubleshoot improper charges and assist in getting them added in a timely manner. Assist in getting ultrasound cases read when a dictation is not found. Resolves scheduling conflicts with other healthcare departments. Seeks to promote intra, inter, and external communications. Maintains ethical standards of relationships and communications. Assures the relieving shift has received hand off communication about the patients prior to staff leaving the work area. Communicates information and follows through on instructions received from the radiologist, radiology physician assistant and / or fellow sonographer(s). Operates the PAC's system appropriately and verify studies before sending to be read. Verify case is available and complete with necessary comments, measurements. Checking hourly and / or at the end of the shift for exams that need to be read are seen by radiologist. Assures that all appropriate consents are signed (scanned to medical records). Familiarizes self with, and compliantly incorporates, all HIPPA mandates of the Department of Radiology and of the Prisma Health System. Follows Prisma Health guidelines in regard to e-mail, voice mail, and Internet communications. Maintains paper and cartridges and calls help desk. Faxes reports when requested. Reports equipment problems to appropriate personnel and, when applicable, records confirmation numbers in appropriate logbook. Keeps passwords current. Recognizes and responds appropriately to emergency situations. Monitors conditions in the department that may hinder or compromise patient care. Notifies appropriate persons in regard to unsafe conditions (electrical, fire, chemical, equipment). Be alert to and aware of unauthorized persons in the ultrasound department. Such persons are to be challenged as to their identity and purpose for being in the department. This applies to all unknown persons irrespective of uniform dress or official identification badges. Mentors newly hired sonographers in the departmental policies and procedures. Instructs sonography students in methodology of departmental procedures and protocols. Must be able to perform common exams listed below: AAA Screens Abdomen Complete/No Aorta Abdomen Limited Right Upper Quadrant Renal Pelvic US Guided IR Procedures Must adhere to 2026 National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) standards/guidelines Must be continuously on the alert to the patient's condition and other disorders. Adverse reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient. Ensures that all documentation required for the completion of exams is done in VISTA CPRS. Must be certain patient identification and requests are identical. Validates all images and corrects incorrect information prior to sending to VISTA for interpretation by the Radiologist. If deletion for VISTA is required, the proper documentation must be presented for deletion of images from the medical record through the PACS Administrator. Help to maintain effective control for the Radiology Department by coordinating organizing and executing the work potential to expedite workflow patterns with the department. Continuously works to develop a cohesive and effective team with other areas of the Radiology Department and with other areas of the entire facility to expedite quality patient care. Ensures that adequate supplies for general Radiology are available to meet workload demands. Assures that procedure rooms are always stocked with necessary supplies, with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Alerts supervisor when supplies are needed. Must recognize and report major equipment malfunctions within a timely manner Ensures that all equipment is in proper working order prior to use. Removes and tags defective equipment and notifies DRT Supervisor or Chief Technologist. Responsible for making routine calibration on equipment. Keeps abreast of technological advances in the Radiology field. Successfully completes all required educational classes and successfully receives all Continuing Education Units (CEUs) as governed by the ARRT, to maintain and active status with the ARRT. Completes all education in TMS in timely manner. Mains certification in BLS. Work with Medical Support Staff to schedule and prepare patients for examinations and explain procedures to patients while performing studies. Obtain pertinent diagnostic examinations for the ordering provider. Correlates the clinical history with the test to be performed. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. Includes the maintenance of patient registration and editing of patient exams in the computerized information system. Properly identifies patient images. Essential so that mistaken identity of patient images does not occur. The Technologist must be certain the patient ID band and the request are identical. Confirms patient identity by verbally confirming patient name and social security number. Responsible to explain exams to competent patients so that patients understand what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible. Qualifications: Education: Graduate from an approved School of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Experience: Minimum 2 (two) year experience in specialty. Certification: ARMDS Certification. Basic Life Support (BLS). License: Have and maintain a valid, unrestricted license in any state, territory, or commonwealth of the U.S and/or certification as required. Duty Hours / On-call Requirements: The expected duty hours for this position are 8 hours per day and 5 days per week. However, this key position supporting 24/7/365 operations which may require work to be conducted in the day, at night, on weekends, and during holidays.
