To provide some perspective here: In 1950, Mayr had recognized a mere three hominid species.

What did happen was that the generation before Dawkins, culminating in 1959, had a form of very strict Darwinian adaptationism, a more classic, organism-centered Darwinian approach that wasn't by any means totally wrong but was much too restrictive.

In 1967, he received a doctorate in paleontology from Columbia University and went on to teach at Harvard, where he would spend the rest of his career.

But in 1972, the two proposed the theory of punctuated equilibrium, a revolutionary suggestion that the sudden appearances and lack of change were, in fact, real.

The American paleontologist (a scientist who studies fossil remains of life from long ago) Stephen Jay Gould was awarded the 1975 Schuchert Award by the Paleontological Society for his work in evolutionary (study of the process of change in the growth of a life group) theory.

Gould first wrote about Piltdown in a Natural History column published in 1979; and although at this point he presented the affair as an enduring mystery, Teilhard de Chardin was front and center in his list of suspects.

That blanket condemnation of past and current scientific practice was a theme Gould shortly returned to, with a vengeance, in his 1981 volume The Mismeasure of Man.

In July 1982 Gould was told he had mesothelioma, a particularly deadly form of cancer.

Annual revenue grew from $30 million to $90 million by 1990.

In 1991, annual revenue reached $100 million for the first time, fueled substantially by partnerships with consumer electronics clients.

In 1994, Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray published their notorious volume, The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life.
