In addition, our new space will allow us to expand our offerings as a community partner to help improve the health status of Prince George's County residents.
Job Description
Under the regular supervision of the Central Sterile Supervisor, orders, receives, checks and stores medical supplies. Decontaminates and cleans reusable items and medical equipment according to Department procedures. Examines sterilized supplies for damage and expiration. Packages supplies for sterilization. May lead the work of less experienced technicians in the absence of the supervisor.
Principal Duties:
Retrieves, cleans, and decontaminates instruments, medical equipment, and supplies.
Dons appropriate protective attire:
Goggles/face mask/shield
Surgical hat (bouffant/cap)
Long sleeve gown
Utility gloves
Impervious shoe covers/booties
Disassembles, cleans, and inspects medical equipment (suction regulators, IV pumps, SCD machines, etc.) using hospital approved disinfectants, detergents, soaps & cleaners.
Disassembles, cleans, and inspects instrument sets and trays:
Pre-treats with hospital approved detergent/germicide.
Flush all cannulated instruments.
Load into washer/decontaminator according to manufacturer's instructions.
Empties and inspects case carts prior to loading in Hamo Cart Washer according to manufacturer's guidelines.
Removes, tags, and logs damaged instruments.
Sends any non-functioning equipment and/or damaged electrical plugs to Biomedical engineering.
Performs daily preventive maintenance on equipment according to manufacturers' guidelines.

Amsco 444 washer/decontaminator
Processes, assembles and sterilizes instruments, medical equipment, supplies, and linen.
Visually inspects equipment and instruments before preparing sets and trays; replaces missing or damaged instruments.
Visually inspects medical equipment and supplies to be sure all pieces are there and that they function properly.
Assembles and packages instruments, medical equipment, supplies and linen packs for sterilization per AAMI guidelines.
Sterilizes by either Ethylene Oxide gas or steam sterilization according to AAM1 guidelines. Handles items in such a manner that preserves the integrity of the package in accordance with safety and infection control standards.
Orders, receives, distributes and stores instruments, medical equipment, and supplies.
Checks for load control labels and equipment inspection labels to ensure current date and proper procedures.
Stores instruments, medical equipment, and supplies in a manner that preserves the integrity of the package in accordance with safety, AAMI, and infection control standards.
Prepares case carts accurately and completely within specified time based on ORSOS preference card and knowledge of procedure intended.
Prepares codes carts accurately and completely. Distributes to patient care units upon request.
Distributes instruments, medical equipment, and supplies per departmental requisition or inventory maintenance.
Assigns priority to emergency requests.
Distributes appropriate instrumentation, medical equipment, and supplies to meet patient age specific needs.
Performs and documents quality control measures.
Performs Bowie Dick and/or Biological tests on steam autoclaves/flash autoclaves and ETO sterilizer.
Reports test results to supervisor and initiates corrective steps as required.
Check screen and parameters.
Reruns Bowie Dick test.
If second Bowie Dick test -fails, machine is shut down and Biomedical Engineering notified.
Maintains control logs in accordance with infection control/AAMI standards.
Maintains a clean, organized and safe working environment:

Makes every effort to answer telephone calls within three rings, introducing him/herself, department and title (if appropriate). Asks permission before placing the caller on hold or using the speakerphone. If caller is transferred, gives the caller the extension number of the person he or she is being transferred to. Offers further assistance to the caller upon completing the conversation.
Maintains an appropriate voicemail message and when away from the office has an out-of-office email message that is brief, current, and includes name and department and offers the caller options if possible.
Returns email and voicemail messages promptly but no later than within one business day (24 hours).
Always mindful of voice and language in public.
Self Management:
Reports to work appropriately groomed and in compliance with the Hospital's dress code. Wears identification badge at all times at chest level and facing outwards so identification is clearly visible.
Complete all assignments within deadlines or negotiates alternative actions and time frames in order to achieve desired outcomes.

How You'll Contribute:

Ensures availability of sterile instruments and supplies daily
Checks all sterilized items for expiration dates
Performs routine maintenance of instruments and equipment
Tracks and records lost/missing instruments and notify O.R. Manager/Assistant Supervisor as needed
Maintains inventory of instruments in work area
Assists in stocking and waste management of supplies
Assist with maintaining computerized patient charts
Proactively identifies supply needs to avoid out of stock situation and makes suggestions to reduce costs
Coordinates instrument repairs with Manager/ASC Supervisor and maintains record of repairs

Qualifications
Purpose & Scope:

Key Responsibilities:

Inventory Management:
Maintain an organized inventory of sterilized instruments, equipment, and supplies, ensuring items are readily available for use in operating rooms, clinics, and patient care units.
Monitor stock levels, identify inventory shortages, and assist with ordering new supplies or instruments as needed.
Ensure the proper labeling and storage of sterilized items in clean, dry, and organized conditions to avoid contamination or damage.
Instrument and Equipment Inspection:
Perform thorough inspections of instruments and equipment for functionality, damage, or wear, reporting any issues to appropriate personnel.
Identify and segregate any instruments or tools that are no longer functional and need repair or replacement.
Maintain a system for tracking equipment usage and ensure proper handling throughout the sterilization process.
Record Keeping and Compliance:
Document the cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance processes for each batch of equipment, ensuring accuracy in records and compliance with hospital policies and industry standards.
Ensure compliance with Joint Commission, OSHA, CDC, and other regulatory bodies' guidelines for infection control, sterilization, and equipment management.

So, what will the Medical Supply Technician at Terrestris do?
Big picture, we are seeking a dependable and hardworking Medical Supply Technician. This position serves as Supply Technician for the Medical Supply Distribution (MSD) areas of Logistics Service within the VA Health Care System. As a Supply Technician, you will provide wards, clinics, operating rooms, secondary storage locations, and other hospital facilities with supplies and material including, but not limited to, sterile and non-sterile medical supplies, instrument sets and equipment.
What does a typical day look like for the
Medical Supply Technician
?
You will:
Pull stock inventory and material for delivery; replenishes stock inventory; interacts with clinical and administrative customers and maintains records on stock levels;
Communicate to the Lead or Supervisor any concerns related to supplies, equipment and procedures.
Provide information to customers regarding medical supplies;
Monitor expiration dates, rotates stock to limit outdates and removes items from use as required by outdates;
Monitor and controls critical supplies;
Perform daily inventory using bar coding equipment on a predetermined schedule that will allow for timely replenishment;
Resolve differences between records and physical count of stock;
Distribute items according to established or ad hoc requirements in computerized inventory management systems;
Deliver supplies in a timely manner and ensures supplies and material delivered are in sterile and operational condition;
Complete specialty cart preparation;
Clean assigned secondary areas in accordance with aseptic principles; and
Receive supplies and material into the medical center's catchment area.
What qualifications do you look for?
You might be the leader we're looking for if you have:
1-2 years related experience
High School Diploma or Equivalent, preferred
Must be a U.S. Citizen
Must be able to pass a background check
Physical requirements - requires standing and walking during the entire workday, and frequent reaching, bending and lifting of supply packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). Work requires pushing loaded carts of medical supplies (weighing in excess of 100+ pounds). With proper assistance, may move heavier items that weigh over 40 pounds. Works throughout the medical center and supported catchment areas, which includes wards, storage buildings, and warehouses that range from a clean environment to hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted.

Duties you will be responsible for:
Provides a safe environment for the patient to prevent potential injury.
Investigates and intervenes in problem situations, reporting appropriate information to Nurse Manager and documents information.
Evaluates and completes assessment of patient needs to provide supportive care before, during, and after procedures and maintains accurate and complete endoscopy records.
Maintains equipment and supplies to include: cleans and disinfects endoscopy equipment, operates and troubleshoots endoscopy and patient monitoring equipment, anticipates and assists with maintaining adequate inventory of supplies and medications, handles and cleans equipment in a safe and responsible manner.

Participates in QI, Materials Management, Safety and Infection Control programs.

Not responsible for administration of drugs, IV procedures, or other therapeutic and diagnostic measures falling within the realm of nursing practices.
Accepts direction from supervisor or physicians and adheres to established routines.

Minimum Requirements
A minimum of 1+ years of previous GI experience preferred
Associates Degree or medical assisting and/or prior technician experience.
Commitment to building strong working relationships with other providers and our healthcare team.
The Ideal candidate would be motivated, energetic and willing to learn.
Experience working in a healthcare setting, preferably in a same day surgery environment.
Required Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Required: BLS, Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers obtained within 30 days of hire.
