The Central Supply Technician is responsible for the cleaning, processing, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation, patient care equipment and re-useable medical/surgical items. This position also functions as a Case Cart Attendant for the Operating Room. Essential Generic Job Functions (List in order of importance): 1. Receives, sorts, processes, assembles or sterilizes both patient care equipment and surgical instruments according to established departmental policies. 2. Understands all detergents and disinfectants used to process items. Implements both Universal Precautions and proper use of P.P.E. 3. Operates and loads sterilizers (Steam, ETO, Sterrad and Steris) and assures biological tests and Bowie Dick tests are correctly performed, incubated, read and recorded. 4. Assures sterilization records are completed correctly by recording all item processed, making sure the correct label/load gun is used, reading and interpreting chemical integrator per load, observing and initialing all computerized print outs for accuracy. 5. Adheres to correct use of computerized instrument count sheets. 6. Prepares case carts for delivery to room by using doctor's preference information to assemble required instruments, drugs and special equipment. 7. Notifies nursing team in room of missing items and confers with coordinator about shortages of supplies and equipment and completes a daily checklist. 8. Lifts a minimum of 50 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 60 lbs. and stands length of shift. 9. Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational Competencies. All areas of the SPD Department - Decontamination, Prep & Pack, Sterilization, HLD, Instrument Tracking system- Required. Experience with all service specialties; Neuro, Ortho, Vascular, General, Robotics, Plastics, GYN, ENT- Required. Must be highly reliable and be available to work all days other than those that were pre-disclosed prior to offer. Must not have alternative jobs that would interfere with HMH schedule being a priority. Skills: Knowledge and Skills Required: 1. Disassembles and decontaminates all instruments, procedure trays, and equipment returned from the nursing units following departmental policies Assembles all instruments and procedure trays following and completing appropriate count sheets Processes all items appropriately using either sterrad or steam sterilization & properly loads, operates and cleans all sterilizers & documents load contents per hospital policies Completes required biological, chemical and Bowie Dick testing and documents results accordingly Reports any discrepancies in testing & potential equipment and/or instrument problems to Central Management immediately Maintains assigned work areas and equipment in a clean and organized condition & prepares case cart request generated by the Operating Room Properly stores all sterile supplies housed in the department & properly dispenses equipment and supplies requested by the nursing units Demonstrates proper use of PPE Personal Protective Equipment and Standard Precautions, proper record keeping, performance testing, cleaning and disinfecting, drying, transportation and storage of all endoscopes. Utilizes endoscope cleaning, testing, and storage equipment properly according to established policies and procedures. Terminally cleans and high level disinfects "used" or "dirty" endoscopes according to established policies and procedures. Working under the direction of the Manager, supervises sterile processing personnel performing all the daily activities of the Sterile Processing department, which include but are not limited to decontamination, assembly and counting of instrument sets, all methods of sterilization , maintaining specialty carts (CPR carts, disaster carts, Case Carts, Latex Allergy carts, GU carts) . Performs functions with conscious regard to procedures while interacting professionally with other departments within the system. Must have extensive knowledge of all operational aspects of a Sterile Processing department and be able to perform the following: identification, cleaning, inspection, testing, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments, operation of mechanical equipment used for cleaning and sterilization, working knowledge of all Regulatory and Infection Control policies and practices that govern CSPD (Central Sterile Processing Department), knowledge of ordering and inventory control, knowledge of medical terminology to identify surgical procedures, the ability to collect and analyze data and computer skills. Work requires a High School diploma or equivalent and one to two years of previous work related experience. Sterile Processing Technician Certification or higher by a NJDOH (New Jersey Department of Health) recognized certification body (Certification Board for Sterile Processing (CBSPD/International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM). At least two years' prior experience as a certified technician working in all aspects of decontamination and sterilization processes and completion of a SPD training course or equivalent. Full-time Description Under the direct supervision of the SVP of Dental Services, the Sterilization Technician supports daily operations of all activities that relate to the reprocessing of reusable medical supplies and instrumentation including decontamination, cleaning, assembly, wrapping, sterilization, and storage processes within all set professional standards and regulations and following strict infection control guidelines. The Sterilization Technician will assist the site staff in performing sterilization, equipment maintenance and inventory as needed. Works under indirect supervision of the Resource Technician performing daily activities of the Sterile Processing Department, which include all aspects of the decontamination, assembly of sets, sterilization processes, and specialty cart restocking (CPR carts, Disaster Carts, Case Carts and Specialty carts). Ensures functions are performed with conscious regard to the procedures while interacting professionally with other departments within the system. Full-time Description Under the direct supervision of the SVP of Dental Services, the Sterilization Technician supports daily operations of all activities that relate to the reprocessing of reusable medical supplies and instrumentation including decontamination, cleaning, assembly, wrapping, sterilization, and storage processes within all set professional standards and regulations and following strict infection control guidelines. The Sterilization Technician will assist the site staff in performing sterilization, equipment maintenance and inventory as needed.
