DEFINITION
Under direct supervision, performs responsible work in water safety instruction, ensuring the safety of swimmers, and the enforcement of safety rules and regulations in and around public swimming pools and other aquatic environments.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Water Safety Instructor is an Entry level classification in the Community Services series. The employee is responsible for carrying out the full range of essential duties and responsibilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direct supervision from the Director of Community Services or his/her designee.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

The Division

The Program
The Recreation Services Division offers a wide variety of Aquatic Programs and Classes at The Victor E. Benstead Plunge pool year-round. The Victor E. Benstead Plunge has been serving the community since 1956. "The Plunge," as commonly referred to, is a heated Olympic sized 50 x 20 meter outdoor pool, open year round. The pool is divided into two courses; one 25 yard and one 26 meter course. The pool is heated year-round to about 80° to 81°. The Plunge operating hours are from 4:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with classes and programs offered at various times.
The Positions
LIFEGUARD ($18.94 - $20.88 per hour)
Lifeguard duties include but are not limited to:
* Enforce pool safety rules and regulations;
* Monitor swimming and other pool activities;
* Rescue swimmers in danger of drowning;
* Apply cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid;
* Inspect swimming pool for cleanliness and perform routine maintenance;
* Keep a daily log of rescues and other emergencies and prepare written reports of these activities;

As a swim instructor you are responsible for the safety of each class and teaching swim skills to students using our curriculum. You will work to build water confidence within your students, encouraging each student to rise to the best of their abilities.
