Job Summary: The Swim Instructor is responsible for providing swimming instruction to people of all ages, following the YMCA of the USA Aquatics and Swim Lessons guidelines. Swim Instructors will provide excellent customer service in a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and satisfaction in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures. 2. Essential Functions: Provide swimming instruction to students of various ages and ability levels. Maintain constant supervision of students, watch for swimmers needing assistance, and aid swimmers when necessary to ensure positive learning environment. Know, understand, and consistently communicate policies and procedures for the pool and whirlpool. Understand the YMCA Swim Lessons program, including swimming levels and skills taught for each level. Evaluate students and recommend placement in the correct skill level. 3. Relationships: This position reports to the Aquatic Supervisor/Aquatics Director who reports to the Branch Community Leadership. The incumbent interacts regularly with their supervisor, staff, volunteers, and participants. 4. Qualifications: Required: Minimum age of 16. Completed YSL V6: Observe & Communicate, YSL V6: Orientation Principles of Youth Development, YMCA Swim Instructor Skills Verification. BLS/CPR + AED for the Professional Rescuer annually, First Aid certifications and Oxygen Certification within 120 days of hire Patience and the ability to communicate with all ages and levels of swimmers. Demonstrated ability to swim in shallow and deep water, and tread water (Stage 4 level swimming skill). Dedicated to member safety and the mission and philosophy of the YMCA. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES * Ensure the safety of all in and around the pool area. * Enforce all school, and pool facility rules and guidelines. * Foster a positive, inclusive, and team-oriented environment. * Preserves a safe environment for patrons. * Maintains pool security. * Makes rescues when needed. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES * Communicate with students and adults. * Be on time. * Strong team-building skills to create a supportive and positive environment. * Able to interact well with the public. * Must be able to swim long distances and tread water for extended periods. * Ability to perform rescues, carry individuals, and handle emergency situations. * Required to react instantly to potential dangers or drowning incidents. * Knows how to perform water rescues, spinal injury management, and proper lifeguarding procedures. * Constantly monitor swimmers and identify hazards before they become emergencies. * Is able to give firm but polite directions to swimmers. * Handles disputes or rule violations calmly and professionally.
