A welder is responsible for measuring, cutting, and assembling metal projects using an electric arc and inert gas. Welders carefully fuse metal components, avoiding contamination on the weld, as well as managing the metal bond defects. They analyze specifications, interpret blueprints, and operate various machine tools and equipment for accurate measuring and cutting. Welders should also know how to do the following things: · Be skillful in the fusing of metals using prescribed welding applications. · Have a working knowledge of the welding equipment involved with the various welding procedures. · Comprehend drawings and develop layout patterns for projects and calculate quantities of materials. · Have a thorough knowledge of metals, arc electrodes, welding gases, and gas welding filler rods. · Recognize defective welds; know the cause and proper procedures for the repair of the defective area. · Have a working knowledge of mathematics calculations pertaining to the welding trade. · Have a working knowledge of the require codes · Be familiar with the work of other trades people in affiliated trades

Fabricates and welds a variety of metals from sheet stock to heavy plate. Welding processes utilized include Tig-Mig-stick and occasional brazing. Work is performed using basic hand tools-jigs-fixtures and precision measuring devices. Can create tight tolerance weldments and straighten as required. Can safely operate a manual vertical milling machines, saws, grinders and overhead cranes. Understands all internal weld procedures and welding related operational procedures. Can train lower level welders. Expert at all weld process used by GSM (GTA, GMA & SMA).
