2026 Summer Intern - Genetic Medicine Technology: Precision Gene Editing Team
Genentech 4.5
Writer and editor job in San Diego, CA
The newly formed Genetic Medicine Technology group in gRED (Genentech Research and Early Development) is redefining the future of cell and gene therapies. Our proprietary non-viral gene delivery and gene editing platforms serve as a versatile foundation for a wide range of therapeutic modalities, with potential applications extending across a broad spectrum of oncology and genetic diseases. We are committed to building a world-class organization that bridges the gap between early-stage technology discovery and life-changing clinical applications.
Within this group, the Precision Gene Editing team focuses on the engineering and optimization of next-generation genome editing technologies. Our team's mission is to discover and develop novel enzymes-including transposases, recombinases, and CRISPR-associated nucleases-to enhance the efficiency and safety of DNA manipulation for our proprietary gene insertion platforms. By integrating rational design, structure-guided computational methods, and directed evolution, we are building a sophisticated protein engineering toolbox designed to manipulate mammalian genomes with unprecedented efficiency and specificity.
This internship position is located in San Diego, CA, on-site.
The Opportunity
Support the design and construction of enzyme variants using molecular biology techniques such as Gibson Assembly, Golden Gate cloning, and site-directed mutagenesis.
Assist in routine molecular biology tasks, including PCR, restriction digestion, plasmid DNA purification (mini/maxi-preps), and sequence verification to support the iterative building of transposase variants.
Utilize non-viral delivery methods, including nucleofection and other transfection techniques, to introduce novel gene-insertion tools (transposases, recombinases, or nucleases) into mammalian cell lines and execute cell-based assays to evaluate their efficiency.
Perform standard analytical assays-such as dd PCR for copy number determination or flow cytometry-to characterize the performance of engineered transposase candidates.
Utilize computational tools and structural biology data to analyze experimental results, helping to refine design strategies and predict the performance of engineered protein variants.
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

At every level, we've eliminated the traditional barriers to encourage collaboration and the flow of ideas. Every voice is heard. All input is valued. The focus is on the “we” not the “me” as we work with our clients and communities to develop projects that work better for people.
