Ever wondered how much your job choice impacts your personal life? After all, it impacts how many hours you spend on the clock, how much money you take home, and what you talk about over the dinner table.
Could it impact who you marry even?
We were curious, so we dove into the data to see who is married to who. More specifically, we set out to see who workers of each job are most likely to marry.

Most Interesting Findings
- Most people marry someone of a similar education or class. If you’re hoping to be a trophy spouse, you might want to hit the books.
- Farmers’ Only might be on to something— farmers are most likely to marry other farmers. The same goes for ranchers and other agricultural workers.
- Software developers are most likely to marry other software developers- considering the gender imbalance in the field, this is pretty impressive. When Software developers aren’t marrying in their field, they marry teachers and nurses.
- Ever felt like every other person you meet is married to a teacher? You’re not crazy- a surprising amount of professions are most likely to marry teachers (including managers, accountants, clergy, and engineers)
- Oh yeah, and did we mention teachers? Teachers really like to marry other teachers.
How We Determined This
Using the US Census PUMS data, we determined the most common occupations for each occupation’s spouse. To narrow the data down, we elected to look at 1,000 occupations with the most matches. While this did cut down on the total number of of occupations, it also cut it down to more common job titles, rather than obscure job titles most Americans are unlikely to work.
From there, we identified the most common match for each job. While a job (such as elementary and middle school teacher) might be the most common match for multiple professions, it only has “most likely to marry” occupation for itself.
For the table at the bottom of the article, the occupation is in the left column and in the right column is the occupation workers in the left hand column are most likely to marry.

How many people are meeting their spouse at work?
While we have no way of knowing how many people are meeting their matching-career spouse at work, people certainly like to marry others in their fields. Guess it must be nice they can talk about computer algorithms, crop rotations, or whatever their work equivalent is together. Even when workers break from their profession, they are still choosing spouses of similar education and social classes.
