How We Determined Pay by State

We based our analysis on the average annual salary data for cashiers and dishwashers from the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, particularly their ‘Occupational Employment Statistics.’

To ensure a fair comparison of salaries across the states, we also considered the cost of living in each area.

We calculated an index by dividing the average wage for a state by its cost of living relative to the national average. For example, if the cost of living index in California is 135.9 and the average pay is $23,190, our index value would be:

$23,190 * (100 / 135.9) = $17,064

We ranked each state based on this adjusted salary index, with the highest index indicating the best average salary for cashiers and dishwashers.
