The Company Each State Applies To Work At The Most

Find a Job You Really Want In

Looking for a job?

Chances are good your mind goes to certain companies first. While some of those may be local, others may be national or international companies. Perhaps a friend or family member works there. Maybe you drive by it everyday or love their Pumpkin Spice Mocha or sweet shoes. Whatever the reason, people seem drawn to apply to some companies more than others.

We set out to find what company people in each state apply at more than people in any other state.

Keep reading to see our most interesting findings and how we determined this one.

What We Found Out

  • Georgia got 3 “c” companies- Coca Cola, Chic-fil-a, and Clorox.
  • There’s a reason most folks in Oklahoma don’t call soda “coke,” they’re trying to work at Pepsi!
  • Alaska workers are most likely to apply for Census jobs, while Hawaii is keen to work for the Post Office.
  • Popeye’s really is Louisiana’s kitchen- Louisiana workers are more likely to apply to the chicken restaurant than any other state.
  • We’re not saying Alabamians play more video games than any other states, but they’re definitely more eager to work at GameStop than other states. Coincidence?
  • While we chose to highlight Hawaii’s strong interest in USPS jobs, they also had more interest in working at numerous hotels (Marriott, Hilton, etc)
  • Freddie Mac in Virginia may not be as easily recognized as some, but millions of people with student loans know them dearly. I wonder if anyone working there is forking over a good chunk of their paycheck to them for student loans.
  • In Illinois, people want that employee discount on Arby’s
  • The Northeastern tip sure is sporty- with Dick’s Sporting Goods, Timberland, and LL Bean all tucked up in there. Maybe Wyoming with Sierra Trading Post should move?
  • Many of the companies have not only a strong retail presence in the state they dominate, but a large corporate one, such as Target in Minnesota and Marquee cinemas in West Virginia

How We Determined This

We did not look for the company people apply to the most, we simply set out to find a company each state’s workers apply to more than all other states’ workers.

Using Google Trends, we determined what company workers disproportionately apply to in each.

We examined over 300 different companies, choosing a wide array of brands and companies with some level of consumer recognition. From there, we found what state had the highest search interest in terms related to the company with keywords such as “jobs”, “careers”, or “hire.” These are all action-packed terms, used by people actively job hunting. People might google Target because they want new pillows, but people googling “Target jobs” are looking for a new job.

Happy Job Hunting!

You now have a bit of insider knowledge to a company people in your state really like applying to. While we can’t guarantee that company is bursting with jobs for you, chances are good it has a strong presence in your state and might be worth a second look.
