How We Determined the Best Job Markets in Virginia

We utilized the latest data from the Census American Community Survey to analyze key Virginia metropolitan areas, focusing only on cities with a civilian workforce of over 5,000.

While the unemployment rate is a valuable indicator of the local job market, it is just one of many metrics we considered. To provide a comprehensive view, we examined multiple factors influencing employment.

Each metro area was ranked based on four criteria:

  • Unemployment Rate
  • Change in Unemployment Rate
  • Household Income Change
  • Current Average Household Income

A lower score in each category indicates a better job market. For example, the Leesburg area had the lowest unemployment rate at 2.7%, securing its top position for that metric. The scores across the four categories were averaged to generate our final rankings of the 38 metro areas in Virginia, with lower scores reflecting stronger job markets.
