1817

Old Baldy was completed in 1817, built farther from the eroding shores.

1845

The failure of this enterprise in 1845 had much to do with the virulent opposition from the established trade and also from the Clockmakers’ Company, a lethal combination, but Ingold’s departure for the New World must have set off some alarm bells for some of the more perceptive in the London trade.

1851

But while the empire grew, the industrial dominance of Britain was faltering, a fact revealed at the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park during the summer of 1851.

1857

In their first public debate at the Mechanics Institute in 1857, Johnson undoubtedly came off worse against the witty, accomplished and well-supported Bennett, but this was the occasion when the germ of an idea for a Horological Institute came to him.

1889

However, the lightship broke loose multiple times from its anchor and would be in the wrong place so proposals for a another light house started in 1889.

1901

In 1901 construction began Cape Fear Lighthouse, a steel 150’ tall structure.

1916

In 1916, T.F. Boyd of Hamlet, NC, purchased Smith Island and renamed it “Palmetto Island.” He built a beach boardwalk, pavilion and an eight room hotel.

1940

In 1940, Laborer was the top reported job for people in the USA named Bicho.

1951

In 1951, abstract art took on new meaning and form in Brazil, largely through the impact of a retrospective of the Bauhaus-trained artist Max Bill in São Paulo and the first São Paulo biennale.

1954

1960

1970

Sherrill eventually abandoned his plans and in 1970 the Cape Fear Corporation purchased the island.

1977

Jack Osborn organized the United States Croquet Association in 1977 with a nucleus of six East Coast clubs.

1983

Since 1983, Bald Head Island Limited has been the named developer.

1986

The Bald Head Island Croquet Club was officially organized on July 26, 1986.

1987

The American Croquet Association was organized in 1987 in Phoenix to promote interest in "Association" or International Rules croquet, currently sanctioning four or five tournaments a year, mostly in the West.

In 1987, Mitchell decided to offer the White Party (now named the “Gala in White”) at the Bald Head Island Club.

1990

Following the Grand Opening of the Bald Head Island Clubhouse in 1990, the affair became known as the Gala in White.

1996

1996 BHI's Modular Scaffold Group is formed

2000

Bald Head Island’s own Bill Berne finished in second place to croquet professional Mac Penwell.By the year 2000, there were three full-sized greenswards.
