Clinical laboratory scientist job in Newport News, VA
Works with Manager, Supervisor or Lead Clinical Lab Scientist on a variety of laboratory projects and participates in PI, QA, and QC to ensure all regulatory requirements maintain an ‘in compliance' status. Functions in a charge or lead role as assigned for the days operations to ensure safe quality and efficient workflow, practices, staffing and operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs, assists and accountable for various clinical laboratory test procedures and ensures proper maintenance and operation of instrumentation.
Exercises professional judgment in the performance of laboratory procedures.
Provides patient care essential to laboratory procedures.
Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate action and reports to provider.
Performs other duties as assigned.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist in all disciplines by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP).
CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire for identified job roles.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
Six to twelve months of laboratory training/job experience necessary in order to become familiar with a variety of laboratory testing procedures.
Knowledge and experience preforming phlebotomy required.
Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing personnel and other clinicians relative to patient testing and information gathering.
Ability to resolve technical problems using standard guides and procedures.
Analytical skills necessary in order to perform and interpret routine tests and recognize abnormal/critical test results.
Must be able to determine the appropriate course of action for abnormal, atypical or critical test results.
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and other Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) software preferred.
Ability to travel.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Laboratory service areas have work environments with frequent exposure to physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from specimens and chemicals. Frequent exposure to infectious agents when handling hazardous material, but potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.

Job Summary and Qualifications
Demonstrates knowledge and understanding and puts into practice general lab policies/procedures as well as department/section specific policies/procedures. Reviews all policy changes as required. Adheres to all regulatory guidelines.

Demonstrates initial and annual competency in all appropriate designated lab sections within set deadlines. Accurately performs proficiency testing when scheduled. Participates in continuing education activities. Assesses competency of others after two years of testing experience in the laboratory.
Participates in all facility/corporate mandatory annual training within set deadlines.
Cooperates in assisting the laboratory team in the completion of miscellaneous duties including specimen receiving and putting away supplies when received in the department.
Organizes and completes daily tasks in assigned area{s}.
Troubleshoots/resolves instrument problems and documents corrective action appropriately; when necessary, performs instrumentation repairs. Investigates/resolves specimen collection problems using Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and specimen tracking tool when appropriate.
Performs quality control and documents appropriately. Works within quality control limits and trends, and follows proper department procedure for corrective action.
Performs preventative maintenance and safety checks of equipment and documents according to schedule.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills to train new employees and/or students in general lab policies/procedures as well as department/section specific policies/procedures.
Demonstrates knowledge and skill necessary to communicate with, provide care for, and assess data appropriate to the age of the patient served.

The Medical Laboratory Scientist I, in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, are responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting waived and non-waived test results. Under general supervision, each individual performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory manager and require a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
Essential Functions
* As outlined by CLIA, after successful completion of orientation, training and competency assessment on all instruments/methods applicable to their role:
* Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
* Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
* Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
* Follow the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
* Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical consultant, technical supervisor, clinical consultant or director
* Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

Identifies any potential patient concerns and brings these issues to the attention of the Office Coordinator or Physician as appropriate.
Ability to measure and record both distance and near visual acuity and pinhole acuity; performs preliminary refraction using objective equipment.
Ability to measure intraocular pressures by applanation tonometry, pneumatonometry and/or use of tonopen and checks pupillary response to light and pupillary defects.
Performs basic visual field testing and patient education as directed by Physician.
Ability to prepare patients for treatments and minor procedures; measures and records vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate) as required.
Ability to instill eye drops as directed by the Physician and assist in the application of dressings, shields and eye patches.
Keeps examination, treatment, laser and any other assigned rooms cleaned and stocked with supplies, medication logs and inventories up to date.
Become certified for photography services required for study participation.
Responsible for the proper handling of all equipment related to job and assists with equipment maintenance and repairs when necessary.
Highly encouraged to obtain certification as Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA).
Requires proficient keyboarding skills, use of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and image management system.
Utilize electronic mail and other instant messaging systems.
May consent patient for treatment and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
Pre-Procedure Preparation:
Prepare the cath lab environment for procedures by ensuring all necessary equipment and tools are sterile, functional, and properly set up (e.g., catheters, guidewires, contrast agents, X-ray machines).
Verify patient information, including medical history, allergies, and consent forms, before the procedure begins.

Position Overview
* Performs all testing accurately and timely within their assigned section using computer linked automated electronic equipment and/or manual methodologies.
