This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
This position is in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service at the Syracuse VA Medical Center, Syracuse, NY. The incumbent may be required to rotate within the clinical laboratory departments(bacteriology, chemistry (including endocrinology and toxicology), molecular biology, coagulation, flow cytometry, genetics, hematology, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), mycology, parasitology, serology, urinalysis, and virology), on an as needed basis.
Duties include but are not limited to:
* Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the occupation. In addition, performs advanced and complex laboratory procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles.
* Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis considering physiologic processes and requirements.
* Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Uses, calibrates, identifies malfunctions, performs limited minor repairs, and performs preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment. Diagnoses deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction and troubleshoots deviations to maintain optimal operating conditions and accuracy of test results.
* Performs and documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles when applicable and theories of performance improvement.
* Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors, which influence test results.
* Evaluates and implements new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of equipment, method comparison, and establishment of reference intervals using statistical methods and theoretical knowledge.
* Incorporates principles of educational methodology in the instruction and training of new employees and students and in the laboratory's in-service/continuing education program.
* Adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace.
* Communicates effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member. Provides excellent service as defined by the customer (healthcare providers, patients, and others).
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 12:00 (Midnight) to 8:00 am with rotating holidays.

Job Summary:
The Cannabis Sampling and Laboratory Technician is responsible for collecting, handling, and documenting samples of cannabis products but also for safely transporting these samples to the laboratory for quality control and testing purposes. This role ensures the quality and safety of cannabis products in compliance with industry regulations while also managing the logistics of sample transportation. This position is also for routine processing of samples to achieve accurate and timely results.
Key Responsibilities:
Cannabis Sampling Technician:
Follow standardized procedures to collect samples.
Document sample collection details accurately, including product information, batch numbers, timestamps, etc.
Safely and securely transport collected samples to the laboratory, following all transportation regulations and protocols.
Ensure samples are stored and transported under the required environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, humidity) to maintain sample integrity.
Maintain detailed records of all sampling activities, including sample tracking, chain of custody, and transportation logs.
Accurately record transportation details, including departure and arrival times, vehicle condition, and any deviations from the standard transportation protocol.
Properly label and package samples for transportation, preventing contamination and ensuring traceability.
Follow labeling standards and regulations for the specific cannabis product type.
Enter sample information into the laboratory information system (LIMS) software accurately and promptly.
Verify and update product and batch information as necessary.
Ensure adherence to cannabis regulations and safety guidelines related to both sampling and transportation.
Participate in audits, inspections, and quality control processes to maintain compliance.
Collaborate with quality assurance and laboratory technicians to address any issues related to sample collection, transportation, or quality control.
Maintain clear and effective communication with relevant stakeholders.
Laboratory Technician:
Execute weighing responsibilities as defined in the SOP efficiently and accurately.
Perform routine and non-routine sample preparations, test, and analysis using the appropriate equipment, instrumentation, reagents, standards and methods.
Accurately complete worksheets and logbooks.
Accurately transfer instrument results to LIMS while maintaining data integrity.
Complete laboratory cleaning per SOP.
Escalate safety observations or lab improvements as appropriate.
Maintaining daily communication with your Laboratory Management.
Qualifications:
Experience in sample handling or laboratory work desirable.

Job Responsibilities:
Pulls, logs and completes finished product and processing sample testing for all specification requirements on each product at the established sampling frequency. Physical, biological, chemical and organoleptic testing includes but is not limited to: butterfat and solids (Foss and CEM), cryoscopy, temperature, acidity, homogenization efficiency, DMC, gram stains, agar/petrifilm plating, rapid-methods bioluminescence (EPIC), weights, code date verification, seal checks, pH, brix, coffee feathering, whipping, peroxide residuals, flavor, odor, appearance and shelf life analysis.
Maintains certification by state for Beta-Lactam antibiotic testing to the Industry Supervisor level.
Maintains calibration of thermometers, pipettes and scales per regulatory requirements to ensure accuracy of ongoing checks. Maintains accurate temperature records for refrigerators, freezers and incubators.
Measures and maintains records of vitamin usage.
Completes tank inventory recording butterfat, solids, acidity and DMC at the specific frequency per management.
Verifies non-conforming product (raw or finished), properly windows and tags affected product, issues hold reports and samples at time of hold from affected units where applicable. Coordinates resampling of hold product and completion of product disposition.
Verifies that plant equipment meets sanitation requirements prior to start up by thorough inspection and proper ATP swabbing. Maintains detailed records.
Maintains laboratory supply inventory notifying QA Supervisor upon need.
Ensures all laboratory documentation (forms, SOPs, etc.) is current and properly completed by lab personnel.
Trains Quality technicians and ensures that performance of testing meets all regulatory and internal specifications.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $24.50 - $24.50/hr.
