Job Description:
Shift: Days

Rotating Weekends
Performs pre-analytical activities including equipment maintenance, function checks, inventory control, supply stocking, specimen collection, biological specimen processing, cleaning, and disinfection of laboratory equipment and spaces. Conducts post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, including reporting results and providing technical support. Completes tests and analytical procedures efficiently and accurately according to established standard operating procedures. Participates in proficiency testing, adhering to federal and state regulations and institutional policies. May act as a preceptor to facilitate orientation and training to new employees and students, documenting appropriately. Offers guidance to technicians and support staff, resolving customer service issues within guidelines and supporting education to clinical staff. Follows safety policies including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and completes required training for handling hazardous waste. Participates in laboratory and hospital performance improvement activities. Evaluates new laboratory techniques and procedures, assisting with data collection and special projects. Facilitates workflow and supports education to clinical staff as needed. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Technical skills and aptitudes related to the laboratory testing, procedures, and processes performed in the department or work area assigned
* General knowledge of laboratory testing functions and equipment use
* Ability to handle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals, and/or irritants appropriately and safely
* Display a willingness and ability to learn and develop new techniques and procedures as needed for research protocol development
* Proficiency in a wide variety of laboratory techniques in specimen preparation, ranging from making basic solutions and reagents, to performing more complex processes such as DNA/RNA extractions, stem cell isolations, and preparations for histological evaluations [Preferred]
* Sound knowledge in a wide variety of laboratory and molecular assays and techniques [Preferred]
Education:
* Bachelor's [Required]
Field of Study:
* in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR Bachelor's degree equivalency with 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses that include: 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology; and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; AND have a laboratory training program that includes: completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP (this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above); or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs testing OR Successful completion of at least a 50-week official US military medical laboratory procedures training course and currently hold or have held the military enlisted occupational specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist (Laboratory Technician); or qualified and served as high complexity testing personnel on or before April 24, 1995 in a CLIA-certified laboratory as of December 28, 2024, and have done so continuously since December 28, 2024. POSITION INFORMATION:
Must possess comprehensive knowledge of professional Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Technician principles, practices, concepts, and theories providing for sound independent work

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
Medical Laboratory Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist (MT, CLS):
Technologist must have a Bachelor of Science Degree
Technologist must have Medical Laboratory Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist generalist certification from a nationally recognized accrediting agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT etc.)
Technologist must have a minimum of two (2) years of laboratory experience
SERVICES:
Services shall be provided 40 hours per week to include rotating weekends and Federal holidays with flexible eight (8), ten (10) or twelve (12) hour tours.
The Chief Technologist, P&LMS (or designee) shall determine, regarding VA needs, the scheduled tour of duty.
Employees shall be given one-week notice of schedule changes.
Should occasionally overtime hours be required due to short staffing or increased workload, prior approval must be received by the CTVHCS P&LMS Chief Technologist or designee.
The Chief, P&LMS (or designee) shall determine, regarding VA needs, the frequency, and lengths of duty hours.
Technologists shall perform various clinical laboratory testing procedures in the General Clinical Laboratory in accordance with VA policies and procedures and the regulations of the medical staff bylaws of CTVHCS.
Technologists shall provide the Contracting Officer Representative (COR) (or designee) at and a two (2) week notice of all planned leave less than three (3) days to provide quality and timely patient care.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Is expected to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.
Will perform, evaluate, interpret, correlate, and validate the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results.
Requires a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision.
Will be required to monitor quality control systems and measures.
Requires the ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions.
Must utilize basic knowledge of laboratory equipment and be able to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.
May need to resolve problems encountered in the laboratory.
Must be able to communicate, consult, and interact with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service, and patient education.
Will perform a broad range of laboratory procedures, including advanced and complex laboratory procedures. Must be able to recognize deviation from expected results and use scientific principles to analyze and correct problems.
Evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis accounting for physiologic processes and requirements.
Maintain and document the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Use, calibrate, and identify malfunctions; repair and perform preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Troubleshoot issues with laboratory instruments and resolve problems. Diagnose deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction.
Perform and document quality control and quality assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement.
Identify discrepancies, solve problems, and present solutions.
Answer inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors that influence test results. Interpret results and suggest follow up test selection or procedures.

Writes weekly/monthly summaries as assigned, addressing specifically the problems identified in the service plan. Maintains the cleanliness and organization of the medicine supply room.
Receives reports on all residents. Counts controlled substances with off going RMA, assumes responsibility for assuring accuracy of count before accepting keys.
Follows proper procedures in emergency situations and responds promptly and positively to resident requests for assistance - including emergency call pendants, telephone calls, and requests from family and friends.
Encourages teamwork through cooperative interactions with co-workers.
