Essential Duties
All officers perform the following essential functions. Time devoted to each of these functions may vary according to assignment, shift, or departmental needs.
Detects and deters crime, using community policing techniques such as community education, problem-solving, law enforcement and presence in assigned areas using a motor vehicle, bicycle, or while on foot.
Stops motorists for traffic law offenses and takes appropriate enforcement action.

Reviews, analyzes and applies crime analysis data including recognition of crime trends and patterns and develop intervention methods. Executes and evaluates the plan with supervisor and other staff members.
Leads and directs volunteers.
May be assigned to recruit and/or Cadet development, including instruction and application of laws, department rules and policies, proper use and maintenance of equipment, and proper safety techniques. Evaluates and reports progress of recruit officers.
Utilizes computers in research, report writing, booking prisoners, crime investigation, communications and other related functions.
Performs administrative functions such as providing input into short or long term goals, training, budget, scheduling, equipment, and other special concerns.
Coordinates, plans and participates in special events.
Performs public relations duties to inform and educate the community. Gives presentations for large and small groups and special populations.
Additional assignments may include, but are not limited to: developing, presenting, or receiving training; instructing school age students; speaking engagements to citizen interest groups; citizen training in crime prevention, safety, and other subjects; researching, designing, and implementing educational/information programs on law enforcement and crime prevention topics for varied groups and learning needs; serving on an interagency or interdepartmental team, and other related duties as assigned.
Special assignments are defined by the Chief of Police and consist of work of a specialized nature performed on a full time basis for an extended period of time. These assignments are responsible to perform the essential functions of Police Officer, but with considerable special emphasis in certain of these functions during their special assignment and they may also require additional skills or training. Special assignments currently consist of Detective, Motorcycle Officer, Canine Officer, School Resource Officer, and Community Livability Officer.

What will you do as a UOPD Police Officer?
The purpose of this position is to maintain peace and public safety through enforcement of laws and traffic control and by providing emergency services on the University of Oregon owned and controlled properties. This position also requires officers to act as intermediaries and problem solvers within the university and surrounding community.
Duties include, but are not limited to, positive engagement with the campus community, patrolling by vehicle, foot and bicycle, directing traffic, enforcing rules and regulations, issuing citations, making arrests, conducting investigations, interviews and surveillance activities.
University of Oregon Police Officers work cooperatively with other law enforcement agencies and may collaborate on crime prevention or community policing functions or serve as a member of a work group or committee. The position will engage regularly with campus community: students, faculty, staff, administrators, visitors, and members of the public utilizing the community policing model. The position will also conduct crime prevention training to provide opportunities for positive interactions with the public.
University of Oregon Police Officers must be able to work a variety of shifts, including but not limited to, days, swing, and graveyard. Police Officers must be able to work any day of the week, including but not limited to weekends and holidays. Some overtime may be required.

What you need to have to be considered for this role… (Minimum Requirements)
• Must be a United States citizen within 18 months of hire.
• Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
• Must possess a High school diploma or equivalent.
• One year of full time (40 hours per week) work experience (can be paid or volunteer or a combination of both) interacting with the public.
• Lateral Police Officer candidates must have at least three (3) years of experience as a Police Officer, including campus police, municipal, county, or state police officer, and must have worked as a Police Officer within the past 5 years.
Special Requirements and Qualifications:
• It is an essential requirement of this position to qualify for and maintain UO driver's certification eligibility, which includes maintaining an Oregon driver's license throughout employment in this position.
• May not have any felony convictions under federal or state law.
• May not have any Class A misdemeanor convictions within three years of application.
• Must be legally eligible to carry a firearm and complete all requirements for certification as a police officer in the State of Oregon.
• Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive background assessment that includes a criminal history check, driving record review, drug screening, medical evaluation, psychological evaluation, and an inclusive appraisal of work history.
• Using the US Supreme Court case Brady v. Maryland, 373 U.S. 83 (1963) as a guideline, the UOPD employees must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law. The candidate must not be subject to any District Attorney's Office Brady Disclosure Material in relation to courtroom testimony.
• Must be able to pass a written exam (equivalent to the 12th grade). This requirement is waived for Lateral Police Officer candidates.
• Must be able to pass the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT). This requirement is waived for Lateral Police Officer candidates.
• Must adhere to the Clery Act, FERPA, mandatory reporting and Title IX reporting responsibilities.
Required Certifications and Training:
• Entry-level Police Officer candidates must be able to obtain Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) basic police officer certification within 18 months of hire;
• Lateral Police Officer candidates must currently possess Oregon basic DPSST police officer certification or have the ability to obtain Oregon basic DPSST basic police certification within 18 months of hire.

Salaries and Fringe Benefits
Recruit Police Officers receive a beginning annual salary of $78,187.20 annually; with experience, education, and training officers can advance to the top step of $99,673.60* annually. After three years of employment, officers are eligible for premium pay for education and certification. Premium pay can be worth up to 15% of an officer's base salary. In addition, Police Officers can qualify for a 5% increase for demonstrated fluency in an eligible language (such as Spanish or American Sign Language). Up to 5% shift differential.
Bilingual Pay Benefit
Per the EPEA Contract, the City shall pay an employee at 5% of base wages for a required intermediate or advanced level competency. Flex Officer Explanation
The Flex Officer position is crucial to our company's operational and financial success. The flex officer provides trained, competent support by working shifts which become open due to illness, call-offs, weather, vacation, or other causes. This enables Sunstates to provide continual, uninterrupted service to our customers, while also protecting the health and work balance of our personnel.
Scheduling Expectations
The scheduling parameters and expectations for a flex officer are different from those of an employee assigned to a fixed post. As a flex:
You will be trained at various posts and /or facilities based on operational need. While you may work at a specific post or location for several weeks due to need, this will not be a permanent assignment.
Your schedule (shifts, days off, hours per week, etc.) will vary based on operational need.
You will be assigned to, or offered the opportunity to accept, shifts as they become available due to staffing needs.
Some of your shifts will be scheduled in advance and posted with the new week's schedule. Sometimes you will be called with short notice and asked to come in to cover for someone who is unable to work their shift.
You are expected to work any shift for which you are scheduled in advance which falls within the availability described on this sheet. If you know you will be unavailable on an upcoming date or time that would normally fall within your availability described on this sheet, you must communicate this with your supervisor, so they know not to schedule you.
For short-notice call-ins, you are expected to work at least 80% of the shifts for which you are called. If you refuse more than 20% of shifts for which you are called in, this could negatively impact your employment status with the company.
