1898

Over one hundred years ago, the DFA had its auspicious beginnings when President Emilio Aguinaldo appointed Apolinario Mabini as the Republic's first Secretary of Foreign Affairs on 23 June 1898, eleven days after the declaration of Philippine independence at Kawit, Cavite.

1927

1952

The Philippines' dynamic participation in global matters culminated in Carlos P. Romulo's election as the first Asian President of the UN General Assembly in 1952.

1976

The Foreign Service Institute was created in 1976 to provide in-house training to Foreign Service personnel.

1986

The EDSA Revolution in 1986 saw the re-establishment of a democratic government under President Corazon Aquino.

1989

The Philippines became one of the founding members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in November 1989, and an active player in regional efforts to establish the ASEAN Free Trade Area.

1991

In 1991, heeding the growing nationalist sentiments among the public, the Philippine Senate voted against the extension of the RP-United States Military Bases Agreement, thus putting to a close the decades-old presence of the United States military at Subic Bay and Clark Field.

Also in 1991, President Aquino signed into law the new Foreign Service Act of 1991 (R.A. 7157), which reorganized the Department along geographic lines and strengthened the Foreign Service.

1999

The DFA played a major role in the forging of a Visiting Forces Agreement with the United States, which was concurred in the Senate in 1999.

2001

At the start of its administration in 2001, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo pursued foreign policy based on nine realities: (see Philippine Foreign Policy).

2006

2007

January 2007: Martinez, Phillips, Butte, and Whitesides publish the first paper describing the patterned-paper technology that would form the base of DFA's approach to low-cost diagnostics.

December 2007: Incorporated in Delaware by Carmichael Roberts

DFA was founded in 2007 by a group of scientists and entrepreneurs with a shared commitment to saving lives and alleviating disease in developing countries and other resource-poor settings through low-cost, innovative, practical diagnostic devices.

2008

April 2008: DFA Business Plan Team Wins Harvard Business School 12th Annual Business Plan Contest

2009

July 2009: Agreement signed with Harvard University giving DFA exclusive licensing rights for diagnostics technologies developed in the laboratories of George Whitesides

2010

January 2010: Una Ryan joins DFA as CEO and President

2011

February 2011: UK Government and The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation award Diagnostics For All $2.99 million to develop three new agricultural tests

2012

March 2012: First field study of DFA's liver function test begins in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

October 2012: Marcus Lovell Smith joined DFA as the new CEO and President

2012: Awarded $2.6M grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to develop a novel diagnostic for the assessment of immunity status against tetanus and measles to support vaccination efforts.

2013

August 2013: First field demonstration of DFA's agriculture and livestock prototypes in Kenya.
