1889

Educational Alliance has served Lower Manhattan since 1889.

1895

She writes the poem for the Alliance’s 1895 Fair Souvenir Book.

1903

By 1903, its Children’s Theater performances (associated with Mark Twain) were justly famous.

In 1903 NYU Professor and Educational Alliance Board member Morris Loeb characterized the Uptown vs.

1907

In 1907, Mark Twain described his understanding of Alliance’s children’s programs:

But anti-Semitism, including a famous incident in 1908 in which downtown Jews were accused by New York’s police commissioner as being responsible for 50 percent of its crime, was a real issue.

1911

Its initially hard-won cultural flexibility has helped give it the ability to focus on varying neighborhood needs even as the neighborhood has changed. It was founded in what is now a rapidly changing neighborhood which once all but defined European immigration as it became the densest urban site in the world by 1911.

1928

The Congregation Hebrew Educational Alliance was formed in 1928 with the merger of the Denver Hebrew Institute and the Beth David Sisterhood.

1932

On October 25, 1932, HEA leadership welcomed newly ordained Rabbi Manuel Laderman to the institution, who was determined to transform the HEA into a synagogue, not only a religious school.

1964

In taking on these programs, the Educational Alliance immediately could provide classes to teach English, with their own school libraries, religious instruction and vocational training allowing it to expand into other activities even as it relied on the HFSA’s prior services (Berkowitz 1964).

1967

1979

Upon Rabbi Laderman's retirement in 1979, Rabbi Daniel Goldberger assumed the leadership of the Alliance.

2010

Compulsory schooling could be seen by legislatures as solving two problems at once: the evils of child labor and the dangers of alien culture and religion.” (5) (Lingwall 2010)
