Job Description Senior Structural Engineer, PE, SE Chicago, IL (hybrid) Chantilly, VA (hybrid) Exp Federal is an established Chicago-based full-service architectural and engineering firm that provides a full range of exceptional design solutions and construction support to the federal government. The Challenge: We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer with design-build and infrastructure experience to join our growing team. Principal Areas of Responsibility Lead in the development of technical documentation, specification, drawings, requisitions, proposals, and presentations to federal clients. Perform project and construction administration as either project manager or structural lead. Project management shall include project labor force estimates, project communications, budget monitoring, and inputs, organizing deliverables, and setting project standards for delivery. Engineering shall include responsibility for the project engineering of projects from concept and schematic design through construction documents to construction and commissioning. Evaluate the work of technical staff and provides feedback based on client needs. Approve the discipline and layout design criteria documents. Assist the Marketing Team with solicitations. Support the Business Development, including write-up of key aspects of projects and preparing fee estimates and assumptions for a particular discipline on potential projects. Foster a commitment to external and internal client service Research information to assist designers in the selection and specification of materials, products, and equipment. Responsible for reviewing contract solicitation documents. Oversee and/or conduct existing condition surveys of structural systems to determine engineering strategies for renovation, and to document and evaluate existing systems. Perform a structural assessment of existing buildings based on historical documents. Required Qualifications: Bachelor of Science (required) in Civil/Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited university. 12+ years of relevant experience. Licensed PE required / SE preferred. NCEES record in order to obtain PE in other states. Familiarity with the Whole Building Design Guide, Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), and Unified Facilities Guide Specifications (UFGS) is strongly preferred. Proficient with building and design codes (IBC, ASCE, ACI, AISC, etc.) Past DOD and federal work with experience in Blast Design and Progressive Collapse desired. Experience with the Design-Build project approach preferred. Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD required. Perform advanced structural analysis modeling on finite element-based programs. Experience with structural systems, including but not limited to, the design of steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, cold-formed, and PEMB structures, as well as general construction practices. Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and work collaboratively on multiple projects. Self-motivated, detail-orientated, client-focused, and positive team player. Ability to travel (including abroad) for projects required. U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a secret clearance. A primary managerial position for all active Urban Design projects and is ultimately responsible for project successes. Responsible for coordinating project schedules, contractual and financial duties. Shares responsibility with Senior Urban Designers and respective leadership for project successes. Recognized ability to impact revenue and growth. Possesses strong leadership and communication skills, a flexible attitude, ability to solve problems creatively and ability to foster and manage effective client relationships. Responsibilities: Acts as lead designer on multiple projects developing urban design concepts at a variety of scales, site and context analysis, presentations and final client deliverables Guides and directs multiple project teams to manage the development of design throughout design development and implementation documents Establishes the vision and sets project goals in conjunction with the client and project team Leads design effort and client presentations to develop and support client relationships Exercises skills of persuasion and negotiation on critical issues Develops creative design concepts for projects and expands on concepts of others Manages design solutions based on principles of urban design and planning including building massing, scale, public space design, building typologies and site circulation to projects Ability to lead public input processes, community engagement and develop stakeholder outreach strategies Oversees schematic land and site planning drawings with graphic content to convey ideas, methodologies and approaches for marketing and proposal requests Oversees the development of and may modify and/or review graphic presentations, 3D rendering and implementation documents to incorporate the design intent Oversees delivery of complete project design presentation to client user group or public forum Coordinates with consultants, community stakeholders and regulatory agencies to meet overall project objectives; manages project details with consulting firms Resolves complex design issues with innovative and practical solutions to maintain goals and objectives of projects Works with respective teams to manage client expectations, team communication and consultant coordination Leads and collaborates in team meetings to discuss project issues, technical issues and coordination with other disciplines Qualifications: Accredited professional degree in Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning or related field Architectural registration or associated licensure strongly preferred Typically 10+ years of experience Urban design or planning related accreditation preferred such as AICP, LEED ND or Ecodistricts AP Proficiency in geographic information systems (GIS) software such as ArcGIS or QGIS preferred Proficiency in architectural software such as 3D modeling (including Revit, Rhino and Grasshopper, 3D Studio MAX, etc.) and AutoCAD preferred Experience with Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp and InDesign graphic software preferred Proficiency in MS Office Suite preferred Successful track record with managing a team and performing duties in a fast-paced environment Experience with the entire project lifecycle, through post-occupancy Strong knowledge of sustainability and integrated design guidelines Knowledge of zoning regulations, land use and mobility planning standards Strong presentation skills and graphic and visualization skills to communicate design ideas at a variety of scales Strong presentation skills and graphic and visualization skills to communicate design ideas Strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time Ability to maintain existing client relationships and build new client relationships Ability to communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner both verbally and in writing Ability to problem solve and apply innovative solutions Ability to collaborate and encourage collaboration in a team environment Ability to effectively meet deadlines at expected quality Travel may be required If you currently work for HKS, please submit your application via the Internal Careers Portal.
