Hamilton Products company history timeline

1880

Hamilton's rapid growth is reflected in the ledgers and journals in the museum's collection dating back to 1880.

J. Edward Hamilton founded the original Hamilton factory, called J.E. Hamilton Holly Wood Type Company, in 1880, and within 20 years became the largest manufacturer of wood type in the United States.

1892

From synchronizing the first American railroads to inventing both the electric and the digital watch, Hamilton has been at the forefront of groundbreaking developments since 1892.

1904

In 1904, L.H. Hamilton and Chester Beach both worked for United States Standard Electrical Works in Racine, Wisconsin.

1910

The Hamilton Beach Manufacturing Company was founded in 1910 and began to produce universal motor-driven appliances, including the now iconic Drink Mixer.

1918

Since 1918, professional aviators have chosen Hamilton watches to accompany them in the cockpit thanks to our innovation, accuracy and precision.

1920

Meanwhile, in 1920, Proctor & Schwartz, Inc. was formed as the new name for Philadelphia Textile Machinery because of a shift towards other products such as thermostatically controlled irons and toasters.

1928

Hamilton’s well-known Piping Rock watch made its debut in 1928 and specially engraved versions were presented to the New York Yankees in celebration of their World Series win that year.

1957

The Ventura has gained a legion of fans since its launch in 1957, including superstar Elvis Presley.

1960

Around 1960, Proctor & Schwartz Electric became interested in the Silex Company, a manufacturer of coffee makers and irons.

By his effort, Hamilton became the world leader in sample handling for the field of chromatography and in 1960 the fledgling company outgrew the family garage, proudly moving into its first of many rental facilities.

1968

In 1968, Clark Hamilton founded an identical company in Bonaduz, Switzerland to enable production of these syringes for the European scientific community.

1970

The invention of the world’s first digital wristwatch was announced May 6, 1970 on ‘The Tonight Show.’ Hamilton presented the Hamilton Pulsar Time Computer: with no moving parts, it was unlike anything anyone had ever seen.

Today Hamilton Bonaduz AG continues to manufacture, design, and create new products in concert with Hamilton Company in the United States In 1970 the company in Whittier, California was relocated to Reno, Nevada where it remains today.

1974

Starting in 1974 the management was turned over to Steve Hamilton, and with the support of his brothers, continues to drive the companies to this day.

1990

In 1990, two powerhouse appliance manufacturers — Hamilton Beach and Proctor-Silex — came together to create the largest United States manufacturer of small kitchen appliances.
