ICES Education company history timeline

1984

In 1984 the company opened its first outlet in Florida, and by the following year, as it celebrated its 50th anniversary, there were 740 restaurants and 34,000 employees.

1985

TRC had purchased the 330-unit Perkins Family Restaurants chain in 1985, and the acquisition of Friendly made it the second largest operator of family restaurants in the country.

1986

Ferris Bueller took a day off, Kenny Loggins was in the Danger Zone, Kirk Cameron had Growing Pains, and Ralph’s was still serving us tasty treats on a hot day back in 1986.

1988

Friendly was purchased from the Hershey Food Corporation in 1988 by the Tennessee Restaurant Company, headed by fast-food wunderkind Donald N. Smith.

1992

ICES was launched in April 1992, with Naylor as the founding Chief Executive Officer.

In 1992 Consumer Reports ranked the company's restaurants last among 14 family food chains, citing surveyed customers' dissatisfaction with the food quality, service, and atmosphere.

1995

ICE signs a memorandum of understanding with Vietnam, allowing for the repatriation of Vietnamese citizens who entered the United States on or after July 12, 1995.

The Office of the Principal Legal Advisor successfully prosecutes and removes Marko Boskic, a Bosnian Croat soldier who participated in the murder of more than 1,000 Muslim men and boys outside Srebrenica in July 1995.

1997

Titanic was breaking box office records, MMMBop by Hanson was a huge hit, Seinfeld was “must-see” TV, and Ralph’s was still keeping people cool back in 1997.

1998

Unfortunately, in early 1998 the price of fresh cream began to climb steeply, eventually tripling, and Friendly was forced to raise prices for its ice cream products while absorbing much of the increased expense.

At the end of 1998, the company announced that it would be closing its Troy, Ohio manufacturing and distribution center, moving those operations to the Wilbraham plant and a new facility in York, Pennsylvania.

1999

The company also announced that it was stepping up the pace of franchise openings, with 25 scheduled for 1999 and 50 to 70 per year to follow.

In early 1999 the company announced the appointment of a new president and chief operating officer and a new chief financial officer.

2000

In March 2000, the company announced that it was shuttering 80 restaurants.

Ongoing renovations to Friendly's restaurants, a program called "Focus 2000," included removal of booths, adding more family-sized tables, hiring additional serving staff, expanding carryout windows, and upgrading dinner menus.

2001

Cofounder Prestley Blake purchased $2 million in company stock during 2001 and has publicly criticized Smith's leadership abilities and spending habits.

2002

With its passage in November 2002, the Homeland Security Act set into motion what would be the single-largest government reorganization since the creation of the Department of Defense.

The Homeland Security Act of 2002 is introduced in the aftermath of the Sept.

2003

Opening its doors in March 2003, one of the component agencies in the new Department of Homeland Security was the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, now known as United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement or ICE.

March 1, 2003, the United States Department of Homeland Security is created through the integration of all or part of 22 different federal agencies and programs into a unified, integrated department.

In March 2003, the Homeland Security Act set into motion what would be the single-largest government reorganization since the creation of the Department of Defense.

Bozkurt "Bozzy" Karasu (@bozkurtkarasu) moved to NYC in 2003 to join The Wooster Group as their Production Manager after working as a freelance performing arts production manager and designer in Istanbul, Turkey for 13 years.

ICE established the first Fugitive Operations Teams in 2003 to expand the agency's efforts to locate, arrest and remove fugitives from the United States.

Blake filed suit against Smith in 2003, claiming he misused $3.5 million in corporate funds.

Friendly President and COO, John Cutter, took over as CEO in 2003 while Smith remained chairman.

2004

A line of decorated ice cream cakes was launched in 2004.

The company hit a snag in 2004, however, when weak restaurant sales, high cream and commodity costs, fierce competition, and cool Northeast weather forced sales and profits to slide.

2005

The company celebrated its 70th anniversary in July 2005.

Blake offered the loan for a second time in 2005, but Friendly management refused to accept.

2006

Dillon Greco celebrates his 13th birthday with a cake batter flavored ice at Ralph’s Famous Italian Ices Sunday, July 30, 2006 in Port Richmond.

Since 2006, Pamela has been working throughout NYC and currently can be found shaking things up at The Dead Rabbit in the Financial District.

2007

1, 2007 ICE launches their electronic travel document system, a system used to review travel document requests and issue travel documents electronically.

2009

She’s the author of The Bubbly Bar: Champagne + Sparkling Wine Cocktails for Every Occasion (Clarkson Potter, 2009).

2010

His title changed to director July 2010.

According to Camper English, the first bar to bring an ice program back to craft cocktails is Weather Up in 2010.

Inspired by the wine industry around him in California, he started www.CORKZILLA.com, a wine and music blog, in 2010.

2011

She escaped the world of financial journalism after falling head over heels in love with whisky and started her site, Miss Whisky (www.misswhisky.com) in 2011.

In 2011 Matthew founded Digitalimit, a design and marketing agency specializing in helping entrepreneurs and small businesses find their voice online.

Phil Galewitz has been writing about the the craft brewing industry in the Mid-Atlantic states since 2011.

2012

In 2012 he moved to Cambridge, MA this time to join Theater Arts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Technical Instructor.

2013

His first book, Apothecary Cocktails- will be released by Rockport/Quayside Publishing in November 2013.

In December 2013, she will acquire a degree in Linguistics and Creative Writing, and we'll see what happens from there.

2015

Larios-Hernandez was added to the ERO most wanted fugitives list in March 2015 after he eluded capture during a nationwide ERO operation targeting criminal aliens.

2017

2017 marks the seventh anniversary of January as National Slavery and Trafficking Prevention month.

2018

A black-market arms dealer with a long history of brokering machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and anti-tank armaments – and who was found guilty in 2018 in a scheme to sell and use surface-to-air missiles – was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison.

2019

Hundreds of children in the Tampa Bay area learned more about the role of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) during the Great American Teach-In in November 2019.

She is based in Berkeley, California, where she explores the sensory parallels between coffee and wine at Hedonic Terroir-Driven Coffee, the roastery she founded in 2019 to bring awareness to the influences of terroir — a household word among wine drinkers — on your morning cup of coffee.

2020

To ensure the welfare and safety of the general public as well as officers and agents in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic response, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that it will temporarily adjust its enforcement posture beginning March 18, 2020.
