Moderate and High Complexity Laboratory Testing. Responsibilities
The essential duties and responsibilities (including but not limited to):
* Assists with performing phlebotomy and collecting appropriate specimens from patients as ordered. Assures pre-authorization and completes appropriate consent forms (ABN) prior to collection of limited coverage tests.
* Assists with special procedures as needed (i.e. bone marrows in the room).
* Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
* Performs specimen analysis of all Chemistry, Hematology and Immunology specimens.
* Maintains and operates all laboratory equipment. Performs daily, weekly and monthly instrument maintenance as indicated.
* Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies and documents all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance. Records proper lot numbers of all controls, calibrators, and reagents.
* Participates in proficiency testing by performing sample analysis and reporting results at least once a year.
* Prepares peripheral blood smear and competently performs complete WBC differential on normal and abnormal smears.
* Performs microscopic examination of urinary sediment.
* Records results on appropriate worksheet and computer system and performs file maintenance. Processes specimens for send-out testing.
* Follows the laboratory's policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either corrects the problem or notifies supervisor. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
* Maintains proper documentation as described by the quality assurance program including accessioning logs, test report logs, quality control logs, equipment records and checklists. Verifies all critical results and documents with accurate follow-up.
* Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and ensures that all supplies are viable before using in patient testing. Prepares reagents, stains and other chemical solutions as needed. Restocks the laboratory area as needed.
* Sends specimens to reference laboratories for any testing not performed in house.
* Processes incoming orders for lab testing including reference laboratory specimens.
* Processes in-house and in-coming results for charting.
* Charts patient results in a timely manner as needed.
* Properly identify and band patients for blood product transfusion. Processes properly labeled specimens according to local bloodbank policy.
* Trains employees in laboratory procedures.
* May act as primary operator for at least one laboratory instrument.
* Participates in development of new instruments and procedures as needed.
* Acts as a resource for laboratory science information.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related health care field OR Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological science or chemistry with a combination of 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the baccalaureate degree. Except for grandfathered situations, bachelor's degree in Medical Technology required.

* Prepare patients for blood draws, explain procedures, and ensure patient comfort and safety throughout the process
* Responsible for correct blood collection, draw blood from patients using venipuncture, capillary puncture, or other techniques; ensure proper identification and labeling of specimens
* Organize, handle, and transport specimens to the laboratory for testing, ensure all specimens are properly processed and stored
* Adhere to quality control and safety protocols to maintain the integrity of specimens and ensure accurate test results
* Maintain and calibrate phlebotomy equipment and supplies, ensure everything is in working order and properly sanitized
* Perform more complex or specialized phlebotomy procedures as required, often with minimal supervision
Qualifications

This position is vital in the health care delivery system. This is traditionally the patient's first clinical point of contact so patient relationship, management of patient care, management of patient information, team communication, demonstration of safer and professional conduct and activities using patient centered medical home principles, policies and procedures is critical. Supports the vision and the mission of the Clinic at all times. The Technician will perform Pediatric, Adult and Geriatric venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks as ordered by the Provider. Will perform routine and special laboratory tests procedures without supervision and as described in the Laboratory procedure manual; will maintain accurate laboratory records and make available for inspections /audits by Lab Supervisor, Lab Director, Lab Consultant and CLIA Surveyors. Performs necessary quality controls; participates in proficiency testing program and maintains lab instruments as indicated by manufacturer recommendation.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (with or without accommodations)
Patient relationships: Will greet and welcome the patient in a pleasant, respectful, culturally and linguistically appropriate manner. Arrives patients and completes the lab visit in EMR system, following established lab workflows (SOP). Assures all patient questions are answered in a positive and cordial manner. Assures the patient has a clear understanding of all communications. Ensures lab orders are verified and ready for patients with a lab appointment; reminds the patient of the importance of keeping the appointment and/or communicating changes.
Management of patient care: Collects appropriate specimens for testing and instructs patients on specimen collection. Completes lab orders in EMR for all tests requested and collected; Prepare and process specimens that are sent out to reference laboratories when necessary; performs patient testing and reporting as described in the Laboratory Manual. Performs routine tests with accuracy and precision under minimal/no supervision. Follows established SOP when transcribing in-house lab results electronically; tracts, reconciles and reviews lab reports daily or as needed; follows policies in place for priority and panic value reporting.
Management of patient information: Delivers panic lab results to ordering or assigned provider with log. Performs quality control measures to validate test results and monitor QC data and participates in an external proficiency testing program. Will keep and maintain all laboratory records and controls on file for 2 years. Organize and upkeep QC records for monthly review. Adheres to all HIPAA regulations in and outside of the Clinic; Communicates patient information as requested to enhance patient services.
Team communication: Participates in department huddles. Approaches patient care as a team involving clinical
and non-clinical staff (eg. Physicians, mid-levels, educators, appointments staff) to achieve patient care objectives. Informs
Supervisor of supplies needed and /or orders supplies as needed.
Demonstration of safer and professional conduct: Calibrates instruments where applicable, maintains instruments following manufacturer recommendations/ troubleshooting procedures. Keeps work area clean and disinfected daily. Records temperature reading daily for control devices; participates in continuing education and attends required meetings. Submits required credential documents in a timely manner (license, certification, etc.). Maintain a friendly and safe environment for self and others. Will refrains from texting and speaking on cell phone while on duty. Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with clinic leave policy. Refrain from informal communication with patients and others. Responsible for owns safety as well as the safety of others. Utilizes PPE and maintains safety measures; follows guidelines in effect.
