JOB OVERVIEW The Living Specimen Coordinator/Maintenance Technician is responsible for the complete care and feeding of the College's living specimens including the animal room animals, barn animals, and fresh water and marine specimens, plus coordinates the efforts of support staff as applicable. The Living Specimen Coordinator/Maintenance Technician also assists with maintaining cleanliness, safety, orderliness, appearance and repair of campus grounds, roads, walks and buildings. POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS Involved in all aspects of care for living collections including, but not limited to: feeding, watering, cleaning, regular animal handling for health and socialization, animal training, enrichment, preventative health care, veterinary emergencies, monitoring and record keeping, cage maintenance, tracking supplies, setting up and taking down fencing, moving animals through pastures, and general upkeep. Schedules, trains, and supervises barn staff, work-study students and interns as available, Assists Director of Facilities Management with budget planning and purchasing related to living specimens. Responsible for covering all basic caretaking duties during breaks and other times when work-study or interning students are not available. Facilitates class/lab use of the animal room/its occupants, including special arrangement of the room, set-up of tanks or enclosures there or elsewhere, safe transport of animals to another location, monitoring and assisting with class/student observations of animals, and occasionally speaking to groups about the animals, their care etc. Maintains an animal collection that supports curricular needs. Identifies remodeling, repair and construction needs of the animal room and barn. Collaborates with additional staff for the management of facility, waste management, and on-campus food system when feasible. Stocks and administers medical equipment and treatments. Facilitates tours and on-campus activities involving the barn and or livestock, and animal room when necessary. Manages all aspects of animal barn husbandry work including, but not limited to: grooming, lambing/kidding/brooding, medicating and vaccinating, cleaning and sanitation, safety and security, veterinary emergencies, and record keeping. Coordinates barn and pasture usage with multiple campus users, with consideration to safety, animal wellness, sustainability, education, and aesthetics. Schedules supply pick-ups and deliveries. In collaboration with academic leadership, advises and executes decisions about animal acquisition. distribution, and deaccession. Cares for animals in a manner that aligns with the school's sustainable mission. Creates, maintains and manages animal care and breeding records. JOB OVERVIEW The Living Specimen Coordinator/Maintenance Technician is responsible for the complete care and feeding of the College's living specimens including the animal room animals, barn animals, and fresh water and marine specimens, plus coordinates the efforts of support staff as applicable. Bowdoin College seeks applications for a 30 hr/wk, benefits-eligible laboratory technician to support the Research in Affective and Translational Neuroscience Lab directed by Dr. Jennifer Honeycutt. This is a grant-funded position. Initial employment will be one year (anticipated start date between May and July of 2022), with the possibility of a second-year pending funding and performance review. The Honeycutt lab focuses on the neurobiological drivers of affective (emotional) dysfunction across the lifespan using behavioral, neural, and genomic techniques. The technician will work alongside Dr. Honeycutt and a team of undergraduate research students to perform tasks including (but not limited to): behavioral assays, tissue collection/processing, immunohistochemistry, and data collection/analysis. In addition to research-related activities, this position also requires attention to detail and managerial skills to coordinate a complex behavioral testing and breeding calendar. Services will be delivered to both the Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology divisions of the facility. Exceptional compensation packages with full benefits are available. Responsibilities Perform routine chemistry testing on automated instrumentation (Abbott Architect ci8200, Abbott Alinity, Advanced Instruments Osmos, Polymedco OC80, etc.) as well as manual chemistry tests Conduct daily and weekly quality control procedures and instrument maintenance Perform urinalysis testing using automated instrumentation (Beckman Coulter Urinalysis, etc.) and manual techniques Execute blood bank duties including cross matching, antibody screening and identification, selected cell panels, and processing blood products Conduct hematology and coagulation testing using automated instruments (Sysmex, ACL Top, Alcor iSed, etc.) as well as manual procedures Perform microbiology testing including plating, gram staining, reading plates, subbing plates, Microscan setup, PCR testing, and other routine procedures Conduct patient phlebotomy and sample processing Perform patient and QC testing according to established protocols and participate in the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Proficiency Testing (PT) Program Independently test, evaluate, document, and report patient testing and Quality Control (QC) results Identify, document, and resolve any collection, processing, testing or reporting issues Positively identify patients prior to sample collection and samples prior to testing or aliquoting Safeguard electronic and paper patient information Provide patient-centered care with professional service to all stakeholders and customers Work various shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required Qualifications Ability to successfully undergo a Government sponsored background investigation (US Citizenship Required) Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field from an accredited institution Required Certification: Must be a nationally certified Medical Technologist (MT, MLS, or CLS) through the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) Minimum 3 years of recent experience in chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, hematology, coagulation, and microbiology Current and up-to-date continuing education required for maintaining certification Knowledge of College of American Pathologists (CAP) and The Joint Commission standards COVID-19 and Influenza vaccinations are required for this position in accordance with VHA Directive 1192.01 Experience working with Veterans and/or VA knowledge preferred No sponsorship available All candidates must be able to: Sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, twist, and reach above shoulders during the work shift Lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist Lift up to 20 lbs Carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance Push/pull with 30 lbs of force All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a protected veteran.
