Purpose Statement We're currently looking for a Research Technician II to support with: * Technical lab support for R&D Department for product/process development. * Performing routine assignments of moderate complexity and significant variation, under limited supervision. * Interfacing periodically with various internal departments (e.g. Marketing, Procurement, Engineering, QA, Operations) and customers in accomplishing project milestones. This role is based in Buffalo, NY. Key Accountabilities and Outcomes Technical Support (70%) * Administers and coordinates projects, assisting in defining project objectives, organizing and prioritizing tasks and conducting necessary experiments and analyses. This may include validating new lab equipment or processes, developing product reformulations and managing segments of larger projects. Interfaces periodically with various internal departments (i.e. Marketing, Purchasing, Engineering) and customers in accomplishing project milestones. * Requests and maintains equipment and supplies needed to complete routine and non-routine assignments. Calibrates and prepares equipment (e.g. scales and balances) for usage in lab experiments/analyses and cleans and stores equipment at the conclusion of such activities. * Writes and/or updates basic procedures regarding equipment operation and/or complicated departmental processes. * Adheres to appropriate sample selection and preparation methodologies to ensure the validity of lab experiments and analyses. This may include validating new raw materials, lab equipment or processes, developing product reformulation and managing segments of larger projects. * Documents the types of lab tests which have been conducted and records results of such tests in a Lab Notebook or in a computer database. * Prepares prototype in development of new food products and/or improvements. * Develops and issues reports on procedures and/or experiments as assigned. * Maintains a sanitary, safe and orderly work environment. Experiments & Analysis (30%) * Conducts complex tests in product/process development and/or improvement. * Conducts routine and non-routine experiments/analyses, evaluating and recording results. May improvise in the application of procedures and methods during such experiments or analyses as appropriate (e.g. ingredient adjustments, sampling modifications, etc.). * Provides support in conducting basic laboratory and pilot plant experiments involving product and process development and design, either independently or in collaboration with other Associates. * Assists in interpretation of data from experiments/analyses, troubleshooting failures. * Solid verbal and written communication skills. * Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced environment. * Ability to extract and analyze data and apply standard formulas. Additionally, the role involves the fabrication and characterization of lithium-ion pouch cell batteries. Essential Functions Performs standard electrochemical procedures, including electrolytic, electroless, and electrophoretic deposition of metals on relevant substrates. Operates a small-scale research and development lithium-ion battery pouch cell pilot line and use it to fabricate lithium-ion battery electrodes as well as to assemble lithium-ion battery pouch cells, using established protocols. Supports the materials characterization of lithium-ion battery components. Supports the electrochemical characterization of the performance of lithium-ion batteries in both half-cell and full pouch cell configurations. Maintains and calibrate laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable results. Maintains the concentration of electrolytes in the plating tanks to ensure consistent performance. Adheres to all safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working environment. Documents experimental procedures, results, and findings in a clear and organized manner. Collaborates with research team members to achieve project goals and milestones. Monitors the stability of plating bath electrolytes. Maintains a deposition of plating of the highest quality for superior marketability and fewer defects. Assist Plating Operators and Utility Workers in ongoing training. Run daily analysis on varied plating processes to ensure proper concentrations and additions. Perform tests, as well as daily data entries to files on baths and various plating properties. Perform various plating baths analysis such as surface tension, brightener, pore count, concentration, stress & tensile testing, pH adjusts, etc. Trouble shoot various plating process issues using laboratory techniques. Operate and calibrate equipment such as electric metering pumps, pH meter indicator, X-ray, etc. Perform plated adhesion tests per customer required specification. Complete internal sample submission testing and reports. Test and report on the quality of internal and outside plating process. Sign off parts release to McGard. Must complete D.O.T. hazardous material training and hazardous material emergency response training (HAZWOP). Run test racks on the R & D plating line. Requirements: High School graduate or equivalent. Strong math and mechanical aptitude. Understand and execute routine written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision. Able to communicate effectively in English both written and verbally. Proven record of exemplary attendance. Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills. Regular use of a respirator.
