General Summary:
The Research Technologist II will perform lab work in the Akhtar Laboratory within the Host-Microbial Interactions, Inflammation, and Immunity (HMI3) Neighborhood in the Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute at Lurie Children's Hospital. The focus of the Akhtar laboratory is to understand the interaction between viruses and the pediatric brain. To achieve this goal, the lab employs a diverse range of approaches, including animal models, cell culture models, molecular biology, and genome sequencing. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing clinically relevant research in the laboratory, which addresses how variations within the viral genome contribute to different neurological outcomes and identifies critical components of defense in the pediatric brain against viral infection. This position will provide a strong foundation for individuals contemplating continued training in medical or graduate school.
The successful candidate will conduct experiments to support research in the laboratory, including viral infection of animals and cells, viral plaque assays, nucleic acid and protein isolation, PCR, immunoblotting, viral genome sequencing, generation of viral mutants, and microscopy techniques. Additionally, the candidate will be asked to record and interpret results, organize data, and prepare short reports to be discussed with the Principal Investigator. Finally, the Research Technician will spend a portion of their time performing basic laboratory maintenance tasks, including cataloging and organizing laboratory reagents, inventorying and ordering laboratory supplies, preparing chemical solutions for laboratory use, and performing routine maintenance on laboratory equipment. It is anticipated that successful projects in which the technician participates will lead to authorship on scientific manuscripts.
Essential Job Functions:
Support scientific research, analysis, and experimentation by performing various laboratory tasks. Following protocols, designs and sets-up and conducts basic experiments.
Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from individual experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improved processes, validity and accuracy.
Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting and entering data. Manipulates, interpret and/or presents results.
Prepares charts and graphs for presentations and publications.
Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
Completes portions of grant applications, manuscripts and publications.
Tracks and summarizes lab supply expenses. Verifies accuracy of invoices. Orders and maintains inventory of reagent, mice and/or lab supplies.
Calibrate and validate laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy and precision in testing. Record and analyze data and report findings to senior laboratory staff.
Maintain an organized and well-stocked laboratory by managing supplies, reagents, and equipment inventory. Place orders for necessary materials.

Education and Experience:
Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 1 year of experience working with diverse groups of people.
Working knowledge of computers, ability to troubleshoot, work independently, and function as a team member is essential. Therefore, experience in regular interaction with outside groups is highly desirable.
Excellent command of the English language and the ability to communicate effectively.
Strong organizational skills including the ability to establish priorities, react promptly to a large variety of requests, and the ability to keep the workplace clean and organized.

The Position encompasses biological, chemical and physical analyses on pharmaceutical products (biologics and drugs) through all stages of the manufacturing process from incoming raw materials to finished goods, and environmental monitoring programs.

What you'll be doing
This is a 1st shift (Monday-Friday) position.
Conduct critical chemical and physical analysis on raw materials, initial, in-process and final products, and samples collected from the environmental monitoring programs at the Round Lake manufacturing facility.
Work under minimum supervision.
Serve as mentor to Quality Laboratory Associate (QLA) I positions.
Provide training and work direction for QLA I positions as required.
Perform review of test data, which includes overall documentation practices.
Perform release functions in LIMS or other computerized systems.
Use sophisticated laboratory instrumentation (e.g., HPLC, HPLC/MS, GC) and computer systems to collect and record data.
Perform advanced chemical assays requiring precise analytical skills and understanding of biology and chemistry principles.
Complete all testing, including special project / protocol testing in a timely and appropriate manner.
Maintain data integrity and ensure compliance with company SOPs and specifications, FDA, GLP, QSR and cGMP regulations.
Participate in functions involving teams, which impact production, increase efficiency, solve problems, generate cost savings, and improve quality.
Perform laboratory and manufacturing audits as required. Audit and update, as required, plant SOPs.
Perform equipment maintenance and calibrations as required.
Document the completion of testing in Notebooks, Controlled documents, Forms and LIMS and maintain accurate and complete quality records.

Investigate deviations and write exception/OOL/OOS/OOT documents.

Proactively and cooperatively communicate with peers and management to ensure awareness of progress and issues; recommend solutions when issues arise.

What you'll bring
Bachelor degree in Chemistry or physical science with 2 or more year's experience.
Must have experience with LC/MS (Liquid chromatography/Mass Spectrometry)
Must have good oral and written communication skills, strong analytical skills and be detail oriented.
Formal training in mass spectrometry and experience in performing MS/MS analyses is preferred.
Knowledge of current Good Manufacturing Practices is preferred.
Advanced laboratory skills with basic knowledge of statistical methods.
Knowledge of Empower Chromatography Data System and LIMS is preferred but not required.
Knowledge of GLP, cGMP requirements and familiarity with USP/ICH guidelines is preferred but not required.
Must demonstrate effectiveness in ability to train others, empowerment, leadership, results orientation, and task completion.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds when required.
Occasional weekend work required.
Must not be color blind.

Summary

Responsibilities
Leadership:
Provide daily supervision, guidance, and communication to Histotechnicians and Lab Assistants to optimize lab production quality, productivity, turn around time, and teamwork in alignment with organizational goals.
Troubleshoot and address / resolve or escalate specimen, lab process, equipment, or personnel issues.
Ensure sufficient inventory of supplies is maintained to support uninterrupted lab operations.
Ensure organization and cleanliness of production areas and materials.
Leads regular team meetings, ensuring efficient use of time and clear outcomes.
Develop and update staff schedules; manage PTO requests to maintain adequate coverage.
Review and approve timesheets for biweekly payroll processing.
Report regularly to manager / senior leaders on team performance, attendance, and staffing needs.
Facilitiate recruitment, onboarding, and training of new team members, ensuring compliance with CLIA requirements for documented competency-based training.
Ensure team compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and CLIA regulations, escalating issues as appropriate.
Lead 90-day and annual performance reviews to enhance employee performance, accelerate lab productivity, and foster continuous team development through targeted feedback and coaching.
Collaborate with lab managers and senior leadership to identify and implement process improvements that enhance lab efficiency and performance.
Participate in monthly and quarterly leadership meetings.
Perform other related leadership duties as assigned.
Pathology Lab:
Accession and gross tissue specimens, including measuring, inking, cutting, and data entry.
Process and embed tissues daily using standard lab procedures.
Section tissues using a microtome and mount them on slides for staining.
Perform routine H&E staining and special stains or immunohistochemistry as requested.
aintain and calibrate lab equipment; change reagents and monitor temperatures as required.
Perform other related pathology lab duties as assigned.
Qualifications
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Associate's Degree in a science related field is required; Bachelor's Degree in a science related field is preferred.
Successful completion of a histology training course required; ASCP certification is preferred.
At least 3 years experience in a leadership role

About the RoleWe are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Lab Technician to support the Molecular Development team in executing high-throughput molecular discovery workflows. This role focuses on reliable operation of the molecular discovery pipeline, maintaining lab readiness, preparing reagents, supporting cell culture and assay execution, and assisting with sample handling. Prepare buffers, media, and reagents to support high-throughput screening and molecular assays.
Assist with mammalian cell culture workflows, including passaging, plating, and maintaining sterile environments.
Support execution of plate-based assays including fluorescence, luminescence, and absorbance readouts.
Help prepare samples for molecular assays such as qPCR, imaging, and related workflows. Maintain a clean and well-organized laboratory, including dishwashing, autoclaving, and general equipment upkeep.
Track consumables, reagents, and stock items; support ordering and inventory management.
Assist with basic equipment maintenance and calibration (pipettes, plate readers, incubators, etc.).
Document experimental activities clearly and accurately, including labeling, data entry, and sample organization.
Collaborate with scientists to ensure efficient experimental execution and contribute to improving protocols and workflows.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering, Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemistry, or related fields.
At least 2 years of laboratory experience (academic or industry).
Familiarity with basic molecular biology techniques, aseptic technique, and lab safety.
Strong attention to detail, organization, and documentation skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

Perform in process inspections, measurements, audit auxiliary equipment and test to meet or exceed customer specifications. Interact professionally and effectively with customers during audits and in support of positive release programs. Accurately document and communicate quality measurements, nonconformance and incidents to ensure quick appropriate action is taken to prevent non-confirming products from getting to the customer or resulting in catastrophic on hold situations. Follow up on rework, open items, out of spec readings and audit findings from individual cell audits. Work with and across teams to prevent contamination and create corrective action plans. Support cell teams to record defects and scrap according to scrap and defects process, rework, labels change, spec sheet and regrind as necessary after appropriate sign off. Assist in qualifications of new bottles and reviewing the requirements with line members. Participate in and support continuous improvement activities throughout the plant, including 6S standards. Mentor Quality Technicians, acting as a backup in the event of absence or need for additional resources. Support and back up critical processes of the Lead Quality Technician. Assist in developing all aspects of quality assurance including establishing metrics, applying industry best practices, and developing new tools and processes to ensure quality goals are met. Participate in and support continuous improvement efforts throughout the plant. Sustain 6S program in the production cells, supporting team members and reporting repeat variation to leadership.
