Job Description
As a cardiac cath lab technologist, you‘ll assist with catheterization of the heart and other electrophysiology procedures. Working in an operating room, cardiac cath lab or similar healthcare facility, you‘ll prepare equipment, assist surgeons, monitor patient vitals, help maintain sterile conditions and more. You might care for patients undergoing angioplasty, stent implantation, ablation, fluoroscopy or other procedures.

Summary:
The Catheterization Laboratory Technologist I has a critical role in supporting cardiac catheterization procedures by preparing the lab and operating essential equipment, including fluoro imaging and digital image acquisition. This role ensures the accurate documentation of patient information and hemodynamic measurements, while also maintaining stringent aseptic technique and patient safety standards. The Technologist I actively collaborates with the medical team to optimize patient care and departmental efficiency, serving as the radiation safety representative during X-ray usage and continually developing proficiency in specialized cath lab technologies.
Responsibilities:

Ensures major equipment is operational in assigned area(s) and documents as required for quality control; reports any issues through chain of command and per hospital process.
Participates in daily room checks and stocking of supplies.
Accesses daily patient schedule and appropriate patient information for assigned procedures.
Ensures appropriate equipment, supplies, and room configuration for all procedures.
Collaborates with procedure team and Cath Lab Lead/Coordinator to ensure appropriate patient care and departmental efficiency at all times.
Ensures proper patient information is entered into cath lab computer and imaging systems.
Ensures proper procedure documentation, hemodynamic measurements/recording, and ECG recognition during assigned procedures.
Ensures patient position is appropriate and safely secured on procedure table per procedure type.
Trains and completes competencies to set up and operate cath lab equipment including, but not limited to: Imaging (X-Ray, intravascular ultrasound-IVUS, intracardiac echo-ICE), contrast injector, hemodynamic system, intra-aortic balloon pump, rotational atherectomy, thrombectomy, left ventricular assist device, etc.
Supports and anticipates the needs of the physician and ensures patient safety when scrubbing procedures; moves/pans table appropriately during fluoro and X-Ray acquisition.
Adheres to aseptic technique 100% of the time during procedures and stops the line if a break in sterile technique is identified.
Adheres to organizational policies and processes related to patient safety, patient privacy, infection control (hand hygiene), and patient communication before, during, and after procedure.
Collaborates with others on the team in sharing knowledge; to gain and provide appropriate knowledge as appropriate; to foster teamwork and team cohesion.
Supports department and team by engaging in patient transport as appropriate.
Obtains and maintains proficiency in access site management.
Acts as radiation safety representative for patients and team while X-Ray is used.
Performs fluoro imaging and digital image acquisition as appropriate for procedure or as instructed by the physician.
Adheres to the attendance policy and departmental productivity standards.

Requirements:
Education/Skills
• Graduate from an accredited school of Radiology Technology, an associate's degree in a healthcare-related field, or an acceptable equivalent required
• Bachelor's degree preferred
Experience
• 0-1 year of experience in an acute care setting preferred
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required within 6 months of hire to work/perform independently
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required within 6 months of hire to work/perform independently at Pediatric facilities
• One of the following certifications is preferred (individuals whose ARRT certification lapsed prior to June 1, 2023, may qualify under LSRTBE exemption criteria):

Job Summary and QualificationsEach individual, under general supervision, performs only those tests that are authorized by the laboratory director to provide data for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. The testing may involve analyses of blood, urine, body fluids and any other materials of human or animal origin; performing blood group, type and compatibility tests for transfusion purposes; using automated or semi-automated instrumentation and/or manual methods; using a microscope for counts and morphology; analyzing test results and utilizing an information system. They may also train and supervise students and specialize in areas such as blood bank, chemistry, hematology, or microbiology. This position involves all age populations. This position reports to the departmental Technical Supervisor and/or Laboratory Administrative Director
What you will do in this role:
Consistently verifies patient identification, specimen tubes, and orders to prevent errors.
Demonstrates understanding by following all policies and procedures established by hospital and laboratory departments.
Performs sample analysis in the areas of demonstrated competency.
As required, performs routine patient procedures and follow-up, i.e. documentation of calling critical values, etc.
Calibrates, standardizes, and maintains instrumentation following manufacturer or established procedures with appropriate documentation.
Performs and documents quality control to ensure the proper functioning of instrumentation, reagents, and procedures. Any out of controls are addressed and documented appropriately.
Evaluates, calculates, and validates tests results, quality control records, and/or electronic files.
Coordinates with medical and professional staff in the dispersion and interpretation of data.
Assists in the teaching and training of fellow employees and students performing laboratory tasks.
Compliance with and documentation of all regulatory standards, policies, and procedures.
Demonstrates good problem solving skills and judgement in dealing with troubleshooting of instrumentation and/or manual processes.
Demonstrates competency and documents all QC, lot-to-lot, calibration, maintenance, and communication logs in an efficient and accurate manner.
Demonstrates and consistently follows all aspects of policies and procedures for proficiency testing.
Use good problem solving skills and judgment in dealing with problem situations.
Uses judgment in utilizing supplies for patient testing in an efficient manner through good inventory practices striving to reduce outdating and waste of products and/or supplies.
Participates in departmental meetings with suggestions and ideas on improving performance in daily tasks.
Demonstrates willingness to improve performance in day to day activities by changing/modifying activities as directed by supervisor.
Demonstrates flexibility needed for adequate staffing coverage in departmental areas as required by scheduling and productivity monitoring.
Able to modify job duties and communicate with customers in an age appropriate manner.
Appropriately assesses the patient's pain and involves the patient in effective management of the pain using age appropriate interventions.
Maintains positive professional interpersonal relationships with employees and all constituencies, encouraging communication as necessary for job performance. Discourages gossip and encourages normal tones when conversing with others in respect to co-workers.
Willingly participates in evaluation of new equipment and/or testing methods.
Demonstrates punctuality in arriving and departing from job at scheduled times, abides by hospital absenteeism/tardiness policy.
Fulfills requirements for assigned interdepartmental positions; i.e. orders, pipettes, safety etc.
Continually checks and resolves inconsistencies on all outstanding logs to ensure all specimens are accounted for and processed as quickly as possible.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
What qualifications you will need:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or a chemical, physical or biological science is required.
Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners - Clinical Laboratory Scientist License is required.
BLS within 30 days of employment is required.
Completion of a NACCLS approved school of Medical Technology is preferred
National Certification as a MLS (ASCP), previously recognized as MT (ASCP), (AMT)or CLS (NCA), is preferred
