    The Laboratory Assistant (Safety) will be supervised by the Supervising Registered Nurse and Lead Supervising Laboratory Assistant I in Central Medical Services at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to: * Performs phlebotomy of patients and employees efficiently and effectively. Prepares specimens for in-house analysis and/or for transport to external reference laboratories. This includes labeling, accessioning, centrifugation, separation of serum/plasma, and documentation procedures. * Performs order entry and results retrieval from the laboratory computer system and/or from paper files. * Applies and demonstrates knowledge of correct methods inf Therapeutic Strategies and Interventions (TSI). * Assist in the maintenance of a safe and secure enviornment through response to physical assults, escape attempts or other major patient disturbance, and assist in the management of the conduct of the patients. * Analyzes various types of specimens quantitatively, using various available methodologies, accurately, precisely, and in a timely manner. * Performs quality control as needed on CLIA Waived machines. * Answers telephones promptly, courteously, and effectively. * Maintains reference laboratory supplies. * Periodically investigates "overdue" send-out reports. * Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance. * Demonstrates willingness and ability to work compatibly with co-workers, supervisors, and patients, and to voluntarily assist as needed. * Maintain a high level of professionalism, as a represntative of the department and of the hospital. * Completes mandatory Core Training sessions as scheduled. * Maintains state phlebotomy certification requirements (i.e. ongoing continuing education). Required Qualifications: + Education to meet certification, license or registration requirement + Upon hire: California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I License Or + Upon hire: California Certified Phlebotomy Technician II License + California Fire and Life Safety Card - National Organization within 30 days of hire + Phlebotomy experience. + 2 years of experience in the health care field in related work.
