Permanent
Build a brilliant future with Hiscox
Member of the Hiscox US Data Engineering practice
Senior Machine Learning Engineer
Reporting to: Director of Data Engineering
The Role:
You will be a machine learning specialist, part of our US Data Engineering chapter. You will work closely with our data engineers and data scientists to bridge the gap between model development and production deployment. You will be hands-on developing integrations, infrastructure, and deployment pipelines for machine learning models. You should be comfortable reading, questioning, and interpreting machine learning models to ensure they are deployed appropriately and effectively
What You'll Be Doing:
Developing and maintaining infrastructure for deploying ML models in both real-time and batch environments.
Building and maintaining endpoints to serve ML models.
Collaborating with cross discipline engineers to integrate ML services into user-facing applications.
Working with platform engineers to align with infrastructure best practices and ensure scalable deployments.
Reviewing pull requests and contributing to code quality across our teams.
Monitoring and maintaining cloud-based ML services, ensuring reliability and performance.
Designing and implementing CI/CD pipelines for ML model deployment.
Writing unit tests and following software engineering principles to ensure code is maintainable.
Contributing to the development and improvement to our model registry, including tracking and implementation of model discontinuation upgrades and model monitoring.
Essential Skills:
Solid experience as a Python developer, ideally in a machine learning engineering context
Hands-on experience of integrated cloud data science platforms particularly Databricks or GCP
Good understanding of core data science principles and understanding of challenges of migrating research code into production code.
Strong understanding of software engineering best practice.
Experience with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform
Experience with CI/CD tools and Git-based development workflows.
Understanding of API operations monitoring and logging.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently on technical tasks.
Experience collaborating with technical and non-technical team members in agile Scrum ceremonies - roadmap planning, feature workshops, backlog elaboration, code review.
Desirable Skills:
Beyond the required skills we are open to individuals of diverse talents. Experience with additional technologies, real-time data platforms or an insurance background are all valued. We want to know how your unique abilities can contribute to our team.
Our Technology:
We operate in a diverse technical landscape and are looking for flexible engineers who can adapt to and use many different tools. We would not expect any engineer to be familiar with the entire tech stack - no engineer can. Instead, we seek people with a good understanding of data structures and algorithms and the ability to apply this knowledge in learning new tools.
We are building a modern cloud data platform to realise the full value of our data. It will be based on Databricks and use dbt for transformation.
For machine learning we are still building our capabilities. We are likely to deploy models in our Databricks environment using tools like MLflow. We will explore the offerings of other cloud providers e.g. GCP to ensure we are using the most advanced tools available.
We take a DevOps approach and strive for continuous integration / continuous deployment. We use Azure Pipelines to deploy our code. We deploy infrastructure the same way using Terraform and Docker.
Our technology landscape is not complete. Our engineering teams will be able and required to help us build out our technology stack to fill gaps and embrace new opportunities.
