Role: Mechanical Design Engineer Location: Durham NC Responsibilities The position will serve as a contractor supporting existing design engineering colleagues in project execution activities, which will include the following types of activities: 3D CAD modeling in Solidworks, creation of part/assembly drawings in Solidworks, assisting with procurement of prototype parts, assembly and testing of prototype systems, processing/reviewing test data, etc. The position will be responsible for spending time in the lab disassembling and building up assemblies to better learn and understand the mechanics, operation and functionality of these components and assemblies. Ability to implement a systematic, data-driven approach to investigate and resolve significant or recurring problems within an organization's processes, products or systems. Comfortable working in food processing plants, mechanical rooms, and shop floors. Comfortable engaging and communicating with customers in similar industries. Willingness to travel 12 times per month for short domestic trips (typically 13 days). Preferred Qualifications Experience using FARO or similar 3D LiDAR scanners and processing point clouds. Familiarity with Autodesk Vault or other PDM systems. Understanding of stainless steel fabrication and sanitary equipment design. Experience with equipment layout in constrained or retrofit environments. Experience with root cause techniques and analysis. Work Environment Approximately 75% office / 25% field (which may include plant environments with elevated temperatures, humidity, and wet conditions). Requires ability to climb, crawl, or maneuver around installed equipment for dimension gathering. Standard PPE provided and required during field visits.
