Mechanical design engineer job in Natick, MA

Mechanical Engineer (Engineering / Design Team) Company: Busek Co. Inc. About Us: Busek is a leader in innovative space propulsion technologies, specializing in electric and chemical propulsion systems. Our team pioneers advancements in space exploration by developing cutting-edge propulsion solutions for government and commercial applications. Position Overview: Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Power Propulsion Units (PPUs) Role Overview: Seeking a senior-level mechanical engineer to join the Design & Analysis Team, with primary responsibility for PPU chassis design. This role requires full ownership of the PPU mechanical system: chassis, covers, slices, interfaces, fasteners, and sustaining engineering. The engineer must integrate electrical, thermal, structural, and manufacturing constraints into robust, flight-ready designs. In addition to their own design work, this person will also mentor and provide oversight to junior engineers working on similar technology. Must Haves: · Chassis & Packaging Ownership - Full responsibility for chassis architecture (covers, slices, interfaces), with strong grounding in DFM/DFA and material properties. · Electrical Coordination - Proven ability to collaborate daily with electrical engineers and translate board requirements into mechanical solutions. · Thermal Design (Space Environment): o Deep understanding of conduction and radiation as the primary modes of thermal transfer in spacecraft environments. o Experience with thermal conduction paths through chassis into heat pipes/spacecraft panels. o Knowledge of thermal vias as a primary method of CCA heat extraction, and how to interface them mechanically (gap pads, preload, flatness). o Familiarity with surface finishes, coatings, and emissivity for thermal radiation management. · Mechanical Analysis Skills - Steinberg analysis for CCAs, shock and vibration survivability, and spacecraft-specific load cases. · Sustaining Engineering - Experience with non-conformances (NCR/MRB), ECO implementation, and supporting hardware through production. · Cross-Functional Collaboration - Effective at working with design, analysis, manufacturing, supply chain, and QA to deliver flight-ready hardware. · Mentorship Capability - Comfortable guiding one junior engineer, offering technical direction while staying fully hands-on with their own design work. · Proficiency with GD&T and compliance with ASME Y14.5 drawing standards. · Experience producing cavity sketch layouts and specialized mechanical drawings for PPU packaging. Nice to Haves · Knowledge of spacecraft radiation effects on mechanical/electrical interfaces (trace degradation, shielding). · Familiarity with heat pipe integration into panel-level designs. · Background with NASA, ECSS, or MIL-STD design standards. · Experience balancing lightweighting vs. robustness in spacecraft hardware. Candidate Profile This person should be a go-getter who takes ownership of designs, drives solutions independently, and thrives in a highly integrated, multidisciplinary environment. They should be equally comfortable creating new PPU chassis designs from scratch, mentoring a junior engineer, and handling sustaining engineering tasks to keep flight programs on track. To comply with U.S. Government space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), employment at Busek requires that applicants be one of the following: A U.S. citizen A lawful U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder) A refugee or an individual granted asylum in the U.S. Or be eligible to receive the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State and/or the U.S. Department of Commerce, as applicable For more information about ITAR regulations, visit this resource.
