Dennis Group's Mechanical Engineers design and implement mechanical systems as part of a broad engineering and architectural team in designing and building food and beverage production facilities. Specifically, HVAC, plumbing / utility, and fire suppression systems. Our mechanical team is involved with designing the mechanical systems, calculating space heat and cooling loads, determining and selecting equipment sizes, and vetting and selecting suitable vendors, suppliers, and sub-contractors. Mechanical Engineers will have technical responsibility for scoping, performing, and delivering multiple concurrent project assignments. You will be a member of our mechanical department and your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Responsibilities
Perform heating and cooling load calculations.
Perform code reviews for HVAC/plumbing/fire protection designs.
Perform mass energy balance calculations.
Perform drainage and line loss calculations.
Perform flow test (hydrant or other) analysis.
Sanitary design considerations (layouts, process exhaust).
PID Drafting.
Bid packages: equipment and sub-contractor - bid list, scope of work, milestone schedule.
Create mechanical schedules.
Vendor shop inspection / FAT.
Develop HVAC, plant utility, plumbing, and fire suppression systems.
Assist in mechanical system design development and coordinate with other internal and external team members.
Develop Mechanical / Utility equipment and construction specifications
Develop P&ID's, equipment layout plans, plant / process utility distribution plans, and system details
Size and develop layouts for ductwork and piping plans.
Assist with the development of the building management system (BMS) controls, details, and plans with electrical and controls engineers.
Create project documents such as calculations, reports, and construction drawings and specifications, etc.
Fixture selection
Perform construction administration in the form of submittal reviews, RFI responses, and field visits to verify construction scope is proceeding per the intent of the design.
Research mechanical / utility materials and best practices

About You
Junior, or Senior pursuing a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
HVAC and/or Utilities design experience is a plus.
Familiarity with heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics
Experience working with computer operations for engineering design programs and computer aided drafting is preferable (AutoCAD, Revit, etc.).
Understanding of the fundamental basics of performing calculations in areas of energy, drainage, line loss, etc.
Past Mechanical experience in food and beverage, pharmaceutical, or other sanitary environments is a plus.
Have a motivated and results orientated attitude.
Willing to travel to project sites - 25%
GPA: 3.0 or above

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following:
Act as the subject matter expert and lead the project management process on commercial domestic water heating products.
Provide technical and application support for commercial water heating products through the development of technical materials, application training, competitive analysis, and design best practices for the BU sales team and external customers.
Provide Tier 2 support for BU sales team, METUS distribution, and the HVAC specification community on how to resolve complex application and technical design challenges.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

Testing: Engineering technicians must be able to perform field and laboratory testing of soil, stone, concrete, grout, masonry, and other construction materials in accordance with ASTM standards. Applicable ASTM standards include but are not limited to the following: D-698, D-1557, D-1556, D-2937, D-2216, D-6938, C-31, C-143, C-173, C-231, and ASTM STP 399.
Documentation: Engineering technicians document field observations and test results by writing legibly in English with proper grammar. Basic mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) is an integral part of all testing and reporting.
Safety: Engineering Technicians must wear appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE), attend safety training sessions, and follow the requirements within the Geo-Hydro Safety and Health Manual.
Physical Requirements Lifting:
Must be able to lift, load and unload soil, sand, asphalt, CMU, and concrete samples weighing up to 100 pounds.
Concrete Sampling and Testing: Must be able to maneuver a 6-cubic foot wheelbarrow loaded with 150-200 pounds of fresh concrete for up to 50 yards over uneven ground.
Unit weight testing requires lifting a 50-pound container of concrete. Six-inch compressive strength test cylinders weigh 30 pounds each.
Volumetric air content testing requires repeated swinging of the 30-pound concrete-filled test device from knee-level to head-level.
Soil Density Testing: The technician must be able to repeatedly drop a 25-pound drop slide hammer to drive sampling tubes into the ground and then manually excavate the sampling tubes back out of the ground with mattock and shovel.
Must be able to load and unload a 90-pound case containing a nuclear density gauge and carry the 50-pound nuclear density gauge by hand for up to 50 yards over uneven ground.
Hand Auger and Penetrometer: Must be able to manually hand auger down to 10 feet into soil to obtain samples and perform portable dynamic cone penetrometer testing. The hand auger may require up to 50 pounds of pull to remove it from wet soil conditions. The total weight of the dynamic cone penetrometer ranges from 20 to 40 pounds. Operation of the penetrometer requires repeated raising and dropping of the 15 pound slide weight.
