Performs all aspects of pre-analytic workflow appropriate for the specific laboratory section to ensure orders are entered correctly, specimens collected are appropriate for the test ordered and are correctly processed/transported.
Verifies order where necessary
Verifies non-patient information (e.g., collection time) according to established protocol.
Handles unresolved orders, troubleshoots where needed.
Verifies with physicians and/or nurses prior to laboratory information system (LIS) order entry to resolve unclear, duplicate or otherwise ambiguous orders.
Verifies specimens for add-on tests are available and acceptable and generates add-on test orders.
Recognizes when fraud and abuse compliance issues require adjustments to the test order
Collecting, receiving and processing of specimens:
Verifies specimens are correctly and completely labeled upon receipt. Evaluates specimens for appropriateness and takes necessary corrective action. Appropriately documents unacceptable specimens and proper notifications as needed.
Prioritizes specimen processing based on established priorities.
Aliquots specimens according to established protocols.
Performs all aspects of analytical testing appropriate for the specific laboratory section,following established written protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP)
Maintains test system integrity:
Performs preventive maintenance on instruments/equipment in a timely fashion according to defined schedule.
Verifies reagents and supplies meet defined acceptability criteria upon receipt and prior to use; takes action to ensure unacceptable items are removed from use.
Ensures that sufficient reagents and supplies necessary for test performance are available. Notifies senior staff when minimum inventory level is encountered.
Performs and records all necessary quality control (QC) required for test system performance.
Evaluates QC results and takes necessary corrective actions according to established protocol.
Performs specimen preparation:
Performs any necessary pretest specimen preparation according to protocols (e.g., microbiology plating, cell cultures, filtering, extraction, separation, elution, absorption, etc.)
Transfers or ships specimens to approved testing locations according to SOPs
Performs tests:
Prioritizes testing based on assignment or established priorities, completes testing within defined turn-around-times (TAT).
Recognizes the need for and follows any age-specific protocols
Responds effectively to changes in the workflow by coordinating a simultaneous series of tests when needed or adjusting work to incorporate STAT tests or fluctuations in work volume.
Monitors daily workflow and priorities to assure meeting service levels.
Performs technical review and interpretation:
Reviews results for completeness, correctness, and consistency within defined test system
Evaluates test results/reactions and provides accurate interpretations as appropriate to include correlation with, and integration of, other patient data as necessary.
Performs visual interpretation/identifications as appropriate.
Recognizes unusual test results/interpretations and completes indicated reflex testing or other follow-up actions.
Follows established notification protocols for critical values, phone/fax/e-mail results requests, abnormalities.
Troubleshoots and solves problems:

Performs testing on biological specimens in hospital and/or specialty clinic laboratory. Collects specimens, analyzes, evaluates, interprets, teaches, and reports test results from a variety of specimens to provide clinical data which aid the physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Performs Maintenance, QA, QC, Quality management, and other activities that support the daily operational functions of the laboratory. Applies critical thinking and cognitive skills to report timely and accurate laboratory reports. Directs designated employees. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science, clinical laboratory sciences or one of the chemical or biological sciences related fields that meets ASCP requirements
MT (Medical Technologist) or MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) through the ASCP within 1 year of employment
ASCP technologist specialist certification in specialty field would be accepted in lieu of MT certification.
Approximately six to twelve months clinical laboratory experience preferred.
Must be able to work independently, meet deadlines, and produce error‑free results.
Interpersonal skills to work with patients, patient's families, physicians, hospital, and laboratory staff.
Leadership ability to assign and review the work of MLTs, MLAs, students and other laboratory allied health staff.

Department: Temp Center Salary/Grade: TMP/01 Assistant Laboratory Prep Coordinator CTD Academic Summer Camp at Northwestern University The Assistant Laboratory Prep Coordinator (ALPC) works closely with the Laboratory Prep Coordinator (LPC), CTD Instructors, the Supplies Manager, Academic Directors (ADs), and Northwestern University lab managers to provide laboratory setups for Center for Talent Development (CTD) Academic Summer Camp science courses.
Employment Dates and Stipend
* Full-time work Monday, June 15 - August 7, 2026
* Salary: $19.00 per hour; 37.5 hours maximum
* Hours: 7:30am to 4pm, Monday through Friday, with a one-hour unpaid break; additional time may be required, and hours may be adjusted depending on scheduled lab and prep times.
Qualifications
* Current or past enrollment in a college undergraduate or graduate degree program involving laboratory science.
* Working knowledge of lab processes and procedures, and experience in setting up and breaking down labs for others.

General Responsibilities
* Learn and implement CTD and Northwestern Policies and Procedures.
* Learn and uphold Northwestern University, and if needed, outside laboratory safety expectations and procedures.
* Uphold and promote the CTD Honor Code.
* Uphold CTD rules and regulations concerning staff conduct, program procedures, and other responsibilities as set forth in the staff handbook and by administrative staff.
* With the Laboratory Prep Coordinator, review all CTD science course syllabi for the assigned science strand prior to the start of the sessions. Support the creation, updating and confirmation of laboratory use schedules with each CTD science strand instructor prior to the start of the sessions.
* Working with the Laboratory Prep Coordinator, review syllabi and lab procedures to determine supplies and materials needed. Communicate needed supplies and materials to the Laboratory Prep Coordinator, and if needed, the Supply Manager, so supplies and materials can be ordered.
* Inventory maintenance of scientific equipment used in laboratory and classroom settings
* Assist in the preparation, set up, break down, and clean up of labs for science courses based on lab schedules and assignments.
* Assist the Laboratory Prep Coordinator, the instructors, and the teaching assistant (TA) staff during labs, paying particular attention to laboratory safety.
* Communicate regularly during the sessions with Laboratory Prep Coordinator, instructors, and TAs for laboratory instructions, set-up, and materials.
* Maintain and clean lab areas and equipment, including proper disposal and cleaning of supplies and lab areas.
* Support the inventory process, packing, and storing of all lab supplies at the conclusion of summer session.
* Working with the Laboratory Prep Coordinator, provide an overview of Northwestern University laboratory safety training and best practices to ensure staff and students understand safety protocols.
* Assume program-related responsibilities as reasonably requested by CTD administrative staff.
