Qualifications
Education:
College graduate, Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent.
Licensure/Certification/Registry:
Registration as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP or equivalent) required. If hired prior to September 2014, five years experience as a MLS may be considered in lieu of registration.
Experience:
Three to five years experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist and a minimum two years as a level II Medical Laboratory Scientist with in depth knowledge of the global laboratory operation. Three (3) years of comparable experience demonstrating in depth knowledge of global laboratory operation may be considered in lieu of internal level II experience.

Responsibilities
Performs various laboratory tests, evaluates data, correlate results with pathologic and physiologic states and patient therapy to determine validity and reasonableness of data.
Evaluate and calculates quality control statistics to assess accuracy, reproducibility and validity of laboratory methods.
Performs analytical and decision-making functions without direct supervision, recognizes unexpected results, and take necessary corrective action.
Integrates and relates laboratory data generated by various sections in making judgments regarding possible discrepancies.
Assists in the preparation and presentation of teaching materials for the Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology.
Performs preventative and most corrective maintenance and repairs on sophisticated and often computerized laboratory equipment. Calibrates laboratory instruments to assure accuracy.
Demonstrates knowledge and theory behind instrumentation. Diagnoses laboratory instrument malfunctions, and decides when back-up methods must be initiated. Operates all instrumentation in assigned areas and performs all technical procedures.
Evaluates and/or develops new test procedures, monitors them for unexpected problems or sources of error.
Researches, reviews and write technical procedures.
Collects and controls laboratory specimens.
Assures the quality and timeliness of patient results by investigating any problem involving specimen collection, results reporting and turn-around times.
Recognizes unexpected results, errors and problems with patient test. Identifies the technical instrumental or physiologic cause, such as patient variable or interfering substances.
Maintains and communicates department records of tests performed, test results and equipment maintenance.
Assists in the overall operations of the laboratory including utilization of resources and laboratory safety regulations.
Maintains regulatory and safety compliance (i.e. CAP, AABB) in area of responsibility.
Assumes primary responsibility for accurate and timely completion of all testing performed within all areas of responsibility.
Maintains 12 hours of continuing education per year, and cross-training in a minimum of two diverse technical areas.
Must be capable of performing all testing within areas of primary responsibility.
Assumes operational management authority for areas of responsibility in the absence of senior management personnel.
Conserves hospital resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to perform job duties.
Contribute to departmental operations by performing other related duties as may be required and/or assigned.
Contributes to effective customer relations by assisting patients, visitors, physicians to resolve expressed concerns and by demonstrating a welcoming and helpful attitude.
Ensures that professional and personal activities conform to Memorial Medical Center strategic plan and philosophy regarding the Guest Relations Program.

What you will do:
Performs clinical lab testing in Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation. Special Coagulation, Immunology Bone Marrow and Flow Cytometry testing are performed on the day shift. Actively promotes patient satisfaction and customer service values with all staff members. Instructs and encourages coworkers to treat patients and customers (nurses, physicians, visitors, vendors etc.) courteously. Performs patient tests, manually and with automated clinical laboratory equipment, reagents and/or test methodologies. Reviews patient test results for accuracy and notifies appropriate clinical personnel or all critical results. Documents this notification per established protocols. Performs quality control per established departmental protocols. Records QC appropriately and takes corrective action when QC is not within established guidelines. Documents corrective action taken. Performs instrument checks, maintenance and troubleshooting per department protocols. Maintains competencies in accordance with policy and procedures of the hospital and laboratory department. Recognizes abnormal or unusual test results and makes appropriate decisions before releasing results. Notifies supervisor and pathologist if necessary. Participates in continuing education programs, in-services, lab meetings and various committees. Maintains a safe work environment by using required PPE and protective devices. Handles biohazardous materials and chemicals according to established protocols. Maintains inventory and supplies within respective departments. Performs computer functions efficiently, manages workload and established turnaround times. Assists in orientation and training of new employees and students. May assist in competency assessment of moderate and high complexity testing. Maintains a broad knowledge of all laboratory departments. May cross-train into other areas of the lab as needed. Reads emails and responds in a timely manner. Other projects or duties as assigned.

Previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433 published in March 14, 1990.

Verifies specimens are correctly and completely labeled upon receipt. Evaluates specimens for appropriateness and takes necessary corrective action. Appropriately documents unacceptable specimens and proper notifications as needed.
Prioritizes specimen processing based on established priorities.
Aliquots specimens according to established protocols.
Performs all aspects of analytical testing appropriate for the specific laboratory section, following established written protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP)
Maintains test system integrity:
Performs preventive maintenance on instruments/equipment in a timely fashion according to defined schedule.
Verifies reagents and supplies meet defined acceptability criteria upon receipt and prior to use; takes action to ensure unacceptable items are removed from use.
Ensures that sufficient reagents and supplies necessary for test performance are available. Notifies senior staff when minimum inventory level is encountered.
Performs and records all necessary quality control (QC) required for test system performance.
Evaluates QC results and takes necessary corrective actions according to established protocol.
Performs specimen preparation:
Performs any necessary pretest specimen preparation according to protocols (e.g., microbiology plating, cell cultures, filtering, extraction, separation, elution, absorption, etc.)
Transfers or ships specimens to approved testing locations according to SOPs
Performs waived, moderate, and high complexity testing
Prioritizes testing based on assignment or established priorities, completes testing within defined turn-around-times (TAT).
Recognizes the need for and follows any age-specific protocols
Responds effectively to changes in the workflow by coordinating a simultaneous series of tests when needed or adjusting work to incorporate STAT tests or fluctuations in work volume.
Monitors daily workflow and priorities to assure meeting service levels.
Performs technical review and interpretation, according to defined SOPs:
Reviews results for completeness, correctness, and consistency within defined test system
Evaluates test results/reactions and provides accurate interpretations as appropriate to include correlation with, and integration of, other patient data as necessary.
Performs visual interpretation/identifications as appropriate.
Recognizes unusual test results/interpretations and completes indicated reflex testing or other follow-up actions.
Follows established notification protocols for critical values, phone/fax/e-mail results requests, abnormalities.
Troubleshoots and solves problems:
