Job Summary and Qualifications
Utilize professional judgment in interpretations of clinical lab results and in responding to unusual situations. Utilize judgment and discretion in considering sample integrity and acceptability, process calibration, reagent concentration and stability, quality control relationship to unknown results, evaluation of unexpected patient results and error identification.
Perform a variety of clinical laboratory tests, including set up of supplies and equipment to analyze specimens (i.e. body fluids, tissue, sputum, etc.) according to written procedures. Forward unresolved problems to supervisor. Maintain the integrity of the specimens throughout the process.
Adhere to established quality control policies and procedures in order to guarantee the reliability of data. Perform quality control procedures as required and maintain adequate control records to include problem log documentation, reporting any abnormal or unusual variances to supervisor and/or Medical Director as appropriate. Perform daily QC review.
Coordinate quality assurance and participate in quality improvement activities.
Document test results and report results to nursing units and/or physicians according to established procedure. Inform supervisor or designee of unusual or unexpected test results after verification and accessing validity of the original test results. Recognize critical and/or life threatening results and immediately telephone critical values to the nursing units and/or physicians.
Check, calibrate and maintain equipment in working order, performing preventative maintenance at prescribed intervals and as appropriate. Troubleshoot technical and procedural problems, make repairs and utilize service "hot" line as needed; arrange service call as appropriate. Keep related records.
Maintain all records and documentation, i.e. calibrations, temperatures, etc., needed to comply with CAP, Joint Commission and other accrediting agencies.
Maintain technical proficiency in a minimum of two (2) of the four (4) technical areas on the day shift; or in four (4) of the technical areas on the evening and night shifts; OR if scheduled less than or equal to 8 hours per week, maintain technical proficiency in a minimum of one (1) of the four (4) technical areas on the day shift; or in two (2) of the technical areas on the evening and night shifts. Technical areas include: Transfusion Service, Chemistry, Hematology, and Microbiology.
Display courtesy and professionalism at all times while providing timely, helpful service to all patients, clients, visitors, physicians, and hospital personnel. Maintain a professional decorum within the work environment under all types of circumstances, demonstrating ability to remain calm in tense and/or emergency situations.
Perform duties of charge technologist in the absence of the Supervisor as assigned.
Act as technical resource to lab and all hospital employees; provide instruction on basic theory, technical skills and applications of test procedures.
Ensure confidentiality of employee, legal, client/patient, budget and all company matters.
Perform phlebotomy duties and effectively communicate the procedure to the patient. Demonstrates competency in obtaining capillary or venous samples from both the inpatient and outpatient population served by the hospital.
Perform phlebotomy for legal alcohol draws and testify in court as required.
Perform specimen processing duties.
Ensure adequate reagent supplies according to Laboratory and Section policies. Receive and store supplies per established procedure.
Conduct tests on proficiency survey specimens and evaluate proficiency testing results.
Review previous day's results for clerical, analytical errors or unusual results, in the absence of the Section Supervisor, or as assigned.
Assist Section Supervisor in the evaluation of new procedures, installation of new instrumentation, and training on new or modified instrumentation or equipment.
Perform technical, procedural and administrative problem solving.
Train and orient Medical Technologists and Medical Laboratory Technicians including students.
Assist in the preparation and revision of procedures as directed by Supervisor or Laboratory Manager, utilizing the CLSI format.
May assist Section Supervisor to prepare for Department and Laboratory inspections.
Attend regularly scheduled departmental meetings and continuing educational programs; maintain current knowledge in the field.
Attend mandatory in-service programs on Universal Precautions, Disaster Plan, Electrical & Fire Safety and Chemical Hygiene Plan/Hazardous Communications. Comply with all hospital and departmental safety practices.
Follow all safety procedures and precautions as detailed in the Hospital Safety Manual, Chemical Hygiene Plan and Infection Control Policy to maintain safe environment for self and others. Report any possible safety hazards to supervisor.
Participate in appropriate role in disasters, fire drills, fires and other emergency situations.
Exercise care in the operation and use of equipment and reference materials. Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Maintain work areas in a clean, safe and organized manner.
Report to work consistently and promptly as scheduled. Provide proper advance notice of absence or tardiness. Work overtime as needed and required.

* Bachelor Degree from accredited four-year college or university.
Experience:
* Minimum of one year MT experience preferred.
Licensure/Certification:

Responsible for the testing of laboratory specimens and the reporting of results in all areas of the core laboratory. Automation and middle ware experience a plus. Follows laboratory policies and procedures and maintains quality control practices in the laboratory.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. 1. Specimen Collection: (a) Collects blood sample by using appropriate venipuncture skills in various situations, different age groups (e.g.: adult, pediatric and neonatal population), (b) demonstrates proper professional conduct and (c) follows specific sample collection techniques as per department protocol.
a. Achieves 95% success rate in venipuncture without complications.
b. Ensures appropriate comfort level for the patients throughout the process.
c. Effectively communicates to the supervisor and to other department personnel any difficulties or problems with specimen collection.
2. Specimen Receiving and Processing: Receives specimen in the computer, follows department protocol in redistributing specimen samples within the different areas of lab and completes specimen processing to the testing stage e.g.: centrifugation, packaging, storage, etc.
a. Document the receipt of specimens in an accurate and timely manner in the computer and ensures redistribution of specimens to appropriate destination
b. Prioritizes specimen distribution as need e.g. STAT or CSF samples.
c. Completes the task of specimen preparation for testing within the standard period of time and documents any irregularities encountered during the process.
3. Specimen Preparation & Distribution: (a) Evaluates the specimen for sample integrity, any pretreatment and prepares solutions and reagents for use. (b) Routes specimens to appropriate reference labs as per protocol.
a. Checks specimen integrity, and documents any pretreatment or any additional steps followed (e.g.: warming blood in case of agglutination) as needed to achieve appropriate outcome.
b. Develops mechanisms to address requests for uncommon lab tests.
c. When implementing new system, informs all the personnel involved of the process created.
4. Assessment: Completes the assessment of instrument and reagent function by (a) following QC/Calibration protocol, (b) recording and documenting the various steps, (c) performing daily/weekly maintenance as per department/manufacturers recommendations
Ensures appropriate QC/Calibrations check as per CLIA standards by:
a. documenting acceptable limits and identifying problem areas
b. maintaining appropriate records of QC/remedial action performed
c. communicating with the supervisor QC irregularities, as per protocol
d. documenting all the maintenance procedures in a standardized format.
5. Planning & Performance of Tests: Performs tests with precision and accuracy. Knows critical values, verifies and records all test results before broadcasting and keeps inventory list updated.
a. Ensures accurate test results, in a timely manner, following department turn-around-time protocol.
b. Recognizes abnormal or unusual outcomes and initiates investigation of the process, such as (1) reviewing previous results (2) consulting with supervisor/Pathologist before broadcasting results.

Maintains a safe environment for patients by assuring that sharp objects, toxic substances and other objects potentially harmful to children are not accessible.
Assures that the environment of care or services is free of objects which may contribute to the likelihood of patient falls, slips or trips. Makes readily available assistive devices for ambulation. Complies with policies and procedures relating to gait belts and similar devices.
Is aware of the increased risk of falls, slips, and trips for elderly patients and visitors, and assures that the environment of care or services is free of objects and spills which may contribute to the likelihood of patient falls, slips, or trips.
Is sensitive to the tendency of older patients to have hearing difficulties.
Verifies that he or she is speaking with appropriate level of loudness so that the patient hears instructions, questions, and conversations with caregiver, but that offense is not given to the patient as the result of the voice being excessively loud. Is able to differentiate problems with hearing versus problems with comprehension.
Correctly interprets verbal and nonverbal response pain management treatments. Takes appropriate action to minimize the patient's level of pain by utilizing various pain management techniques and methods.

Medical Laboratory Scientist
Baccalaureate degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a major in chemical, physical, or biological science. Completion of clinical training in an approved school of medical technology or documented laboratory training (at least three months in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing). Registered through ASCP, AAB, HEW, or AMT preferred. OR;
Associate degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a major in chemical, physical, or biological science or equivalent. Completion of clinical training in an approved school of medical technology or documented laboratory training (at least three months in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing); AND registered as an MLS or MT through ASCP, AAB, HEW, or AMT.
Responsible individuals attuned to the operations of a hospital is required. Must be self-motivated, conscientious with the desire for good, quality patient care in mind at all times

In This Role:
* You will be using automated analyzers, microscopes, and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment.

* Ideally, you will have experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes, pipetting and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers).
