A Day in the Life of a Steering MRITechnologist:
Perform magnetic resonance imaging procedures as prescribed by a physician.
Produce high quality MRI diagnostic images from a remote location with the help of an MRI Tech Aide.
Ensure release of patient with proper follow-up information via the MRI Tech Aide.
Monitor patient's well-being during scans via cameras and through feedback from MRI Tech Aide and recognize patient discomfort or medical problems and take appropriate action.
Recognize emergency situations and direct the MRI Tech Aide in emergency shutdown of gradient and/or main magnetic field (quench) when applicable.
Instruct patients as to the proper physiological requirements for the procedure.
Ascertain whether there are any contradictions to the patient entering a magnetic field (i.e., staples, pacemaker, magnetic prosthesis, etc.).
Ascertain area of injury of patient's symptoms to assist the physician in reporting the proper diagnosis.
Prepare patient for exam, explain the procedure, position patient for exam, administer contrast, and assist the patient at the end of the procedure.
Assure all necessary consent forms are signed prior to performing examinations.
Correctly process all pertinent exam related information including direct computer entry as directed.
Maintain a clean, safe, orderly work area and observe OSHA and HIPAA requirements at all times.
Be able to recognize reactions to contrast media and be ready to intervene when necessary by administering CPR.
Be thoroughly knowledgeable of and comply with the policies and procedures of the Corporation.
Report any equipment and maintenance problems to the appropriate persons regarding equipment operation, malfunctions etc.

Job Duties
Perform variety of diagnostic exams.

Prepares MRI scanner and performs quality control tests. Monitor inventory of supplies and maintain room cleanliness and neat appearance.

Obtain quality MRI images of patients. Demonstrates competence in following established scanning protocols and exercise's ability to adjust protocols as required.
Operates MRI scanner safely and competently. Ensures patient safety by screening for contraindications such as, but not limited to, cardiac pacemakers, sheet metal fragments, shrapnel, jewelry, wallet, metal prosthesis, etc.

Utilizes supportive protective and immobilization devices as required for patient safety and comfort.
Render patient care in a professional and courteous manner. Explain all procedures to the patient and evaluate care as it pertains to physical assessment and emphasize need for patient to tolerate enclosed space of magnet bore. Coordinates the MRI exam with the appropriate medical unit to ensure the quality and continuity of patient care.
Reviews each exam for technical accuracy and identifies anatomical orientation on all images. Identifies each patient and reviews the requisition for consistency of examination ordered with clinical diagnosis. Assures that all images are transmitted correctly to PACS for radiologist viewing.
Demonstrates practical application of age-related factors.
Reports any significant problems related to patient, physicians, procedures, housekeeping, maintenance, supplies, or personnel to the Lead Technologist and/or Department Director. Demonstrates competency in IV access and IV contrast administration.
Cares for patients while they are in Radiology Department by checking IV's, catheters, tubing airways, and patient monitoring equipment.
Utilize proper sterile techniques in setting up and performing interventional procedures.
Properly administers preparations to patients for exams per protocol.
Performs reconstructions/3-D imaging and MR per protocol.
Maintains continuing education credits for ARRT licensure.
Demonstrates competency in operating the power injector in a safe manner per department protocol.
Properly enters charges for exams in RIS (Meditech) in a timely manner.
Takes call as assigned by Lead Technologist.
Demonstrates willingness to assist in additional duties.

What qualifications you will need:
Education:
Graduate of AMA approved School of Radiologic Technology. Responsible for continuing education credits as mandated by the ARRT for licensure.
Licensure:

Essential Responsibilities:
Performs MRI examinations of the brain, body, spine and extremities on patients of all ages effectively adjusting scanning parameters for different patient body habitus. Selects and modifies technical factors to enhance images; uses flare and SAT imaging techniques. Determines appropriate equipment for scanning up to but not limited to body coils.
Identifies gross pathology in the human body and adjusts T1 and T2 scanning parameters to provide pertinent information for interpretation. Adjusts parameters of equipment to minimize risk factors to self and patient.
Effectively performs Diffusion studies, MR Angiograms, reformats and MIP imaging. Performs specialized exams i.e., MRA runoffs and post arthrogram work ups.
Effectively uses magnetic resonance and adjusts parameters to minimize exposure to patient and self. Follows established protocols and effectively uses scanning techniques to include, window and contrast levels, scanning time sequences, scanning delays, scanning thickness, FOV, scout images, reformatting, image reconstruct and 3-D image reconstruct. Photographs, archives and retrieves images.
Is certified to start and remove IV lines for contrast studies per established departmental policy and procedure. Identifies and responds to IV contrast reactions up to and including calling emergency personnel. Proficient in the use of an IV Contrast Power Injector.
Identifies each patient, reviews each patients requisition and previous studies for consistency (examination ordered/clinical diagnosis), and records pertinent data on MRI requisition at all times. Responsible for performing comprehensive screening of patients and other individuals before allowing them to enter the MR system room.
Effectively explains, knows, and informs anyone entering the MR system room the danger associated with implants and devices, in addition to pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), and loose objects.
Reviews each examination for technical accuracy, presents completed examination to radiologist, and communicates pertinent data to persons responsible for the care of the patient following the procedure.
Identifies anatomical orientation on all required images and ensures proper film identification on all images.
Maintains daily patient MRI log documenting correctly and accurately patient information to ensure the quality of patient care: patients full name, patients member number, patients physician, type and amount of contrast used examination performed.
Demonstrates ability to organize patient care and set priorities by providing critical care first and by implementing the physicians orders.
Performs proper computer skills and shows working knowledge of patient orders, status changes, patient charges and profiles.
Performs other duties as directed.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications: Experience
Minimum one (1) year of experience to include on-the-job training and internships as an MRItechnologist or registry eligible ARRT advanced certification in MRI required; however, for new hires in classification must obtained wtihin 12 months of hire with one (1) year recent experience as a Radiologic technologist with ARRT required.
Per the National Agreement, current KP Coalition employees have this experience requirement waived.
Education
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.Graduate of an accredited radiology technology program or MRI Accredited Certificate Program required. EXPERIENCE:
Minimum 3 years' experience as a MRITechnologist
EDUCATION:
Must have a minimum associate's degree in Radiology or be a graduate of an accredited two-year radiology program.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) in Radiography, or American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMIT) and maintain current valid registration from ARRT or ARMIT. MR advanced registration through ARRT or ARMIT is required upon hire for IDTF centers. Non-IDTF centers require MR advanced registry within the first 12 months of employment. Additionally, must meet the state licensure requirement for the state in which they practice.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Knowledge of routine to complex MRI procedures and protocols.
Skill in operation of MRI equipment as well as applicable ancillary equipment.
Ability to work independently and multitask.
Ability to provide documentation accurately and concisely.
Demonstrates understanding of human cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, pathology, radiopharmacology, and medical terminology.
Knowledge of computer applications, including information and billing systems, keyboard input, digital archiving, and retrieving of data.
