A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II As a machinery operator, you spend your day working directly with light to heavy equipment. Your work typically involves coordinating the maintenance and operation of city equipment with minimal supervision. Construction and industrial maintenance projects generally fill up your day, and these involve the use of rollers, graders, backhoes, front-end loaders, forklifts, dump trucks, or bulldozers. Your job is essential to the city, and you perform maintenance on designated streets, utility systems, landfills, and including providing trash & debris collections services for residents while safely following city policies and procedures. You are constantly on your toes and ready for any new and unexpected challenges that may arise in the city. This can include emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, accidents, and hazardous material spills. When you aren't out in the city, you generally are back at the office filling out daily reports and other forms for machinery use, service requests, and inventory control. You also ensure that the equipment is safe to use by performing preventative maintenance inspections and proper minor repairs. Daily sweeping of streets in designated areas, weather permitting. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS: City vehicle, two-way radio, backhoe, front end loader, side loader, rear loader, sanitation/roll-off truck, backhoe, grapple truck, brush unit and pressure washer. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires some unusual working hours, irregular hours or skills, may involve occasional travel; hazards exist which may result in lost time, accident, exposure to soiling of clothing and skin surface; work involves normal weather changes. Physical effort requires cleaning the vacuum of the sweeper by climbing and the cleaning of any vehicle that is used. Must be able to lift greater than 15 lbs. EDUCATION/SKILLS REQUIRED: Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent; however, will be afforded an opportunity to acquire within nine (9) months if the applicant does not possess one at the time of employment. Sufficient knowledge of the subject to perform work in a limited range of work situations with intermittent supervision. Some experience is preferred; however, it can be accumulated during 2 to 6 months employment in the position. Must also possess a valid Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record is required.
