PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Set up, operate and adjust manual spray-painting equipment to apply a wide variety of coatings to components and apparatus with a uniform texture, appearance and thickness.

Receive work assignment from supervision.
Read and understand safety regulations and MI package including drawings, change notices, operation sheets, specifications and work authorizations.
Mix, strain and thin a variety of coatings. Check and adjust temperature and viscosity as required.
Assemble hoses, valves, agitator, pots, spray gun, tips, etc. and set proper air pressure, fluid flow and spray pattern to obtain proper atomization.
Operate spray equipment or use a brush to uniformly apply a variety of primers, finishes, and coatings to exacting thickness tolerances on various parts without runs, sags, pinholes or flaws. (Coatings normally have a limited pot life and recoating time.) Operate infrared heat lamps to cure coatings.
Touch up and rework final finish coatings by sanding, filling and feathering scratched and damaged areas to make surfaces uniform in texture, appearance and‑thickness.
Check coating for uniformity of texture, thickness and appearance to ensure compliance with specifications.
Operate lifting and handling equipment to move material in the painting area.
Maintain tools, equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition and notify supervision when painting materials are depleted. Clean equipment thoroughly after each use by flushing lines, guns, tips and tanks.
Sign off operations completed and obtain first piece and final inspection sign off on operation sheets as required.
Make proper time charge entries and record data as required.
Perform other work of equal or lower classification as required.
This is a Union Represented position.
Basic Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in Aircraft, Military, Marine, or Automotive Painting.
Operational knowledge of, and work experience with, Automatic/Manual Spray equipment and materials, such as Graco, polyurethane products, and similar finishes.
Work experience with interpreting blueprints, sketches, and manufacturing instructions.
US citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior work experience in Aircraft, Military, Marine, Naval or Automotive painting.
Documented experience and ability to operate cranes and forklifts.
Documented work experience with data entry in SAP and MRP systems.
User experience creating, saving, sharing, and manipulating docs within the Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, and/or Excel.

Job Description
Under general supervision, performs skilled painting work on exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures and equipment. The essential duties include but are not limited to the following:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
1. Applies paints and other protective or decorative finishes to various exterior or interior of buildings, including painting and finishing of partitions, window casings, doors, cabinets, cases and woodwork. Paints street equipment, traffic or airfield markings, playground facilities and other outdoor structures.
2. Prepares surfaces for painting, including erecting and hanging scaffolding, removes all paint or varnish by scraping or sanding, washes, cleans and patches surfaces and otherwise prepares surfaces, such as wood, metal, glass, stucco, wallboard, brick, cement, tape and drywall for painting.
3. Mixes and prepares paints, lacquers, varnishes, shellacs and other preservatives. Selects, blends and matches colors in proper proportions.
4. Assembles, operates various types of painting equipment, including spray guns, pressure washer, grinder, high reach power and other equipment. Cleans and maintains brushes and other painting equipment, disposes of hazardous materials.
5. Occasionally performs more exacting painting, including lettering and touch-up work.
6. Transports and delivers paint, materials, and various types of painting equipment to the worksite.
7. May occasionally plan work programs, including estimating and ordering materials and equipment required for assigned project.
8. Prepares estimates, work orders and other job related documentation.
9. The 7346 Painter may perform other duties as assigned/required.
Nature of the work: Sustained physical effort with considerable standing, bending and occasionally heavy lifting, working in confined spaces, and intermittent exposure to hazardous heights and poorly ventilated areas, streets and roadways.
Qualifications
1. Current Category 16, 17, or 18 Exempt Employee in Class 7346 who has worked at least 2,080 hours in class 7346 AND
2. Education: Completion of a recognized painters' apprenticeship program AND
3. Experience: Two (2) years of verifiable experience as a journey-level painter which included a combination of painting exteriors and interiors of buildings, structures equipment, roadways and airfields.
Experience solely in automotive or sign painting does not qualify.
Substitution: Additional qualifying experience can be substituted for the apprenticeship on a year-for-year basis.
4. License and Certification: Possession and maintenance of a valid Class C California's Driver's License.

One-year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).
