The general function of the position within the organization is to perform complex work related to the protection of life, persons, and property of the citizens of Lake County through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. The position is under moderate supervision. Duties include, but are not limited to, responding to dispatch calls for service to involve emergency and non-emergency situations; investigating crimes, suspicious conditions and responding to complaints. The Deputy Sheriff is also responsible for arresting persons suspected of violating ordinances and statutes, including the use of physical force as necessary to subdue suspects. A person in this position will interview offenders and victims of crimes; appear in court to testify on behalf of the County; serve warrants, and summons; speak to organized groups or the general public about various law enforcement activities; and coordinate special education programs.
YOU MUST BE CURRENTLY WORKING AS A FULL-TIME CERTIFIED POLICEOFFICER.
* Available to work all shifts, including holidays and weekends.
* Currently employed as a Certified PoliceOfficer; and,
* Good standing in their department as of the date of certification by the Merit Commission; and,
* Two years of full-time, continuous experience with a law enforcement agency, the definition of which includes, but is not limited to, authority to make arrests and carry firearms; and,
* Successfully completed Illinois Basic PoliceOfficer Training, or Basic PoliceOfficer Training Program which can be transferred and accepted by the Illinois State Training Board.
For good reason shown, including but not limited to when necessary to comply with federal or state laws and regulations, the Commission may consider lateral candidates who are not currently employed by law enforcement agencies at the time of application or certification.

Lateral Transfer Benefits
Newly hired deputies who have at least three years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement officer within the 48 months prior to hire are afforded a higher starting wage, up to 10 days of vacation and 40 hours of paid sick time during the first year of employment. After the first year of employment, deputies hired with lateral transfer benefits accrue vacation time in accordance with the County's vacation schedule, based on their total number of years of experience as a full-time certified law enforcement officer.

* Sixty (60) credits of post high school education (associate degree level or higher) from an accredited university, college or technical school, preferably in criminal justice, police science, business or public administration, or the social sciences. Work Schedule

* Cost of living adjustments beginning the year after the retiree or survivor turns age 60 with annual increases of the lesser of 3% or ½ of the annual increase in the CPI-U.

Uniforms
The Village will issue uniforms to personnel assigned to the Police Department who are required to wear them. 2026 SALARY:
The City of West Allis and the West Allis Professional Police Association have a current contract that began on January 1st, 2026, and will run through December 31st, 2029. The salary information below is provided from this contract and is effective the first full pay period following July 1st, 2026, when hiring is tentatively scheduled to occur.
The starting annual pay for PoliceOfficers residing in the City of West Allis as of July 1st, 2026, is $65,884.06 and rises in five annual increments to $99,019.54. The perimeter starting annual salary is $64,662.69 and rises in five annual increments to $97,147.44. New hires will begin at Step 1 of the pay scale. With approval of the Police Chief and the Police and Fire Commission, applicants with prior law enforcement experience may be offered a starting wage that is higher than the starting wage listed. This is responsible and specialized work in a semi-military type of organization which requires employees to take orders and perform all assigned duties quickly and effectively. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this position. Respond to general information questions from the public; interview complainants, witnesses, drivers, etc.; explain the nature of criminal offenses to offenders; inspect driver's licenses; mediate civil disputes; interrogate or interview suspects; advise person of constitutional rights; testify in court or at other legal proceedings; issue a citation or summons to offenders in lieu of making a custodial arrest.
Support the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the State of Wisconsin and the Ordinances of the City of West Allis; actively support the policies and procedures, programs, objectives and philosophies of the Department; conduct thorough investigations on all assignments and submit complete reports in accordance with current departmental reporting procedures; take appropriate action on all matters requiring police attention, whether in response to a specific assignment, by personal observation while patrolling an assigned district, or performing the tasks associated with other general assignments; direct efforts toward the development and reinforcement of good community-police relations; inspect all assigned equipment at the beginning of a tour of duty to assure its sufficiency and proper operation, and report any deficiencies to the supervisor; and be familiar with all possible aspects of an assignment and strive for excellence in performing the duties so assigned.

Physical Requirement

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT: This recruitment is open to all qualified applicants; however, within eighteen months of employment, an appointee must establish residency within the City of West Allis or designated perimeter. CAMPUS SAFETY GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: This work involves supervising the behavior of students outside the classroom, assisting the teachers with immediate disciplinary problems in the classroom, promoting the well-being and safety of students, and providing assistance and direction to campus visitors. There is considerable contact with students, staff, parents and the general public. Must be tactful, use fairness and independent judgment when dealing with a variety of problems and emergency situations experienced by students and visitors. The employee must also exercise initiative in keeping informed of procedures and policies.
An employee in this position works within clearly established systems and procedures, must exhibit organizational skills and exercise independent judgment and confidentiality in the performance of duties. The Campus Safety must exhibit initiative and embrace a collaborative team approach to accomplish the mission of the district.
QUALIFICATIONS:

* Must have possession of a valid Red Cross First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation/AED Certification or equivalent.
POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

a. supporting school safety and district crisis plans.

g. assisting students who appear ill, distraught, or otherwise needy, by contacting parents or appropriate school personnel and referring to the appropriate services.

i. assisting the DHSSSW and School Resource Officer in escorting students to and from various locations.
2. Particpating in appropriate professional development activities in order to enhance job performance.
3. Cultivating and developing inclusive and equitable working relationships with staff, students and community members.

Lateral Transfer Benefits
Newly hired deputies who have at least three years of full-time experience as a certified law enforcement officer within the 48 months prior to hire are afforded a higher starting wage, up to 10 days of vacation and 40 hours of paid sick time during the first year of employment. After the first year of employment, deputies hired with lateral transfer benefits accrue vacation time in accordance with the County's vacation schedule, based on their total number of years of experience as a full-time certified law enforcement officer.

Sixty (60) credits of post high school education (associate degree level or higher) from an accredited university, college or technical school, preferably in criminal justice, police science, business or public administration, or the social sciences. A PoliceOfficer assigned to Patrol operates under the direct supervision of the Patrol Commander and Patrol Sergeant. Work Schedule

* Survivor benefits reduced to 66 2/3% of deceased employee's salary at time of death (subject to cost-of-living adjustments).
* Cost of living adjustments beginning the year after the retiree or survivor turns age 60 with annual increases of the lesser of 3% or ½ of the annual increase in the CPI-U.
* Retirement pension calculated by multiplying 2.5% for each year of service by the “Final Average Salary,” capped at 75%.

Uniforms
The Village will issue uniforms to personnel assigned to the Police Department who are required to wear them. If an officer separates from the Police Department and does not complete his/her initial three-year period, the individual will be required to reimburse the Village for the cost of uniforms.
