This internship is intended for students interested in gaining experience as a scientist and learning about career opportunities in biomedical research.

Expected Salary:

Minimum Requirements:
Acceptance into the Kenan Fellows High School Student Summer Internship is awarded on a competitive basis to Palm Beach and Martin County high school students entering their junior and senior year after the summer.
Students must be 16 years of age by June 5, 2026.
The intern must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
This summer internship position is full-time for eight weeks. The intern will be expected to be on campus every day unless they have an approved reason, such as illness.
Acceptance of family members of existing University of Florida employees in the program will be subject to compliance with the UF's nepotism policy.

The FUN Lab aims to transform our understanding of fatigue, one of the most prevalent yet poorly understood symptoms across the healthcare system, by integrating neuroimaging, psychophysiology, and computational modeling. Our work spans from basic science to clinical/translational neuroscience with humans, and our team includes collaborators from medicine, engineering, and psychology. The assistant research scientist is expected to play an integral role in current extramural awards, while collaborating with center investigators and affiliated faculty/staff to build a portfolio of independent and collaborative research focused on incorporating sensing technology in the early childhood education space. “Sensing technology” refers to tools that use sensors to acquire information about human behavior via physiological data (e.g., speech, locomotion, heart rate). In the context of developmental science and education research, sensing technology refers to tools integrated into classrooms to collect data about multiple teachers and students simultaneously. This tech includes: (1) cameras, location trackers, audio recorders, and other devices that capture continuous, real-time classroom information, and (2) algorithms that recognize and quantify parent and child behaviors (e.g., language, gestures, visual gaze, interactions) without requiring hand-coding of data.

We are looking to add a highly motivated and enthusiastic assistant research scientist with a can-do attitude, a strong passion for research and engineering excellence to our growing inter-disciplinary team comprising of Mechanical, Chemical, Material Science, and Electrical Engineers, as well as Applied Physicists.
The group conducts fundamental research on nanoscale mass-transport by leveraging the convergence between i) in-situ metrology, ii) bottom-up synthesis of nanostructures, and iii) process engineering for energy and healthcare applications. Specifically, we leverage atomically thin (2D) materials as ideal model systems to probe nanoscale mass transport at the extreme limits of length scales.
The successful candidate would conduct experimental research, prepare detailed scientific reports, and publish papers in top tier peer reviewed international journals. Specific focus areas are on understanding highly selective transport of sub-atomic/atomic/molecular species at the extremes of length-scales, fundamental insights into the mechanisms governing bottom-up synthesis of nanostuctured materials for atomic-scale control to enable rapid and highly selective transport, and development of strategies to realize functional devices to enable practical applications.
The candidate is expected to actively identify, contribute towards data curation, writing, and submission of federal/state/foundation funding grant applications with the eventual goal of moving towards principal investigator status on grants. Candidate is also expected to provide some level of day-to-day supervision for undergraduate and graduate students in the laboratory as well as work with academic/industrial collaborators.
