The Registered Respiratory Therapist under the supervision of the Director of Respiratory Services, Technical Supervisor, Shift Supervisors, provides and administers all aspects of Respiratory Care Therapy and supportive equipment as stated in the Department Policy and Procedure Manual.

Health
includes:
Assists in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of all patients with pulmonary disorders in both critical and non-critical areas pursuant to a prescription of a licensed physician.
Performs cardiopulmonary evaluation, monitoring, respiratory therapy treatment techniques, respiratory procedures and patients and family education.
Responsible for the acquisition, analysis and interpretation of data obtained from physiological specimens, performing diagnostic tests, studies and research of the cardiopulmonary system and neurophysiological studies related to respiratory care.
Administers and/or monitors medical gases, mechanical ventilation support, artificial airway care, bronchopulmonary hygiene, pharmacologic agents related to respiratory care procedures, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation related and limited to respiratory care.
Utilizes the application of scientific principles for the identification, prevention, remediation, research, and rehabilitation of acute or chronic cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
Administers therapeutic Respiratory Care procedures and sets up related Respiratory Care equipment as prescribed by the physician.
Records all pertinent information of provided therapeutic procedures and patient response in the electronic medical record system, EPIC.
Sets up, verifies proper function, operates and monitors all invasive and non-invasive respiratory equipment on patients in need of respiratory assistance.
Participates in the management of patients on life support systems by recommending and performing appropriate changes based on blood gas results and weaning studies.
Responds to and participates in all emergency and trauma codes.
Oversees the clinical performance of Certified Respiratory Care Technicians to assure clinical compliance to department policies and procedures.
Changes and maintains ventilators, ventilator circuits in accordance with the Infection Control Policy of the Department Policy and Procedure Manual.
Runs quality controls on blood gas analyzers.
Monitors and changes all manifolds, including but not limited to emergency oxygen, nitrous oxide and nitrogen manifold cylinders.
Retrieves, cleans and assembles all respiratory equipment using disinfecting solutions and cleaning agents in accordance with infection control protocols.
Identifies the needs of the patient population served and modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture, language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc.). This process includes communicating with the patient, and primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.).
Lifts a minimum of 35 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 165 lbs. and stands a minimum of 6 hours a day.
Adheres to the standards identified in the Medical Center's Organizational competencies.
Performs other work as requested by the Director or his/her designee.
Qualifications:

Graduate of an AMA approved Respiratory Care program.
Associate degree.
Comprehensive knowledge of all clinical aspects of Respiratory Care.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
NJ Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
NJ Registered Respiratory Therapist Certificate.
AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

Responsibilities

Maintains an accurate and current awareness of all departmental and hospital policies and procedures as evidenced in clinical competencies, attendance at departmental in-services, review and compliance with all communication sheet entries, announcements and memoranda pertinent to the operation of the department.
4. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures
5. CATH LAB SPECIFIC: Operates a wide variety of complex technical equipment for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. Continuously monitors patient and response and makes appropriate suggestions to the cardiologist and/or angiographer. Assists the cardiologist and/or angiographer during the performance of cardiac catheterization with and without angioplasty. Understands all technical aspects of Cardiac Catheterization and Primary Cardiac Angioplasty.
6. SLEEP LAB SPECIFIC: Under the general supervision of the Sleep Medical Director perform various in and out of lab sleep testing to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. Knowledge and understanding of indications and contraindications for noninvasive ventilation and oxygen therapy. Educate patients as needed on sleep disease processes and current therapies that are being utilized. Coordinates quality assurance data collection and other daily processes including a variety of duties to support the operations of the department. Able to perform the duties defined for a sleep technician and able to provide oversight of other sleep center staff as needed.
Qualifications
EDUCATION
Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy, NBRC approved college or equivalent required, B.S. preferred. Four weeks training in Cardiac Catheterization and Primary Angioplasty and 6 months on-the-job training, two years of sleep lab experience. Ongoing education in the field of sleep medicine and continuing education units annually as defined by the AASM for technologists in an accredited sleep program; must additionally meet all BRPT and AASM educational requirements. Ongoing education and continuing education units to maintain CPFT/RPFT credential. Ongoing education with specialized bronchoscopy procedures.
EXPERIENCE
One year in-hospital clinical practice experience. One year in sub-specialty area (Cardiac Catheterization, Pulmonary Lab Sleep Lab, Bronchoscopy)
LICENSURE
Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Therapy. Basic Life Support Certificate by American Heart Association. Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certificate by American Heart Association. Brief Description of Duties:
All Respiratory Care Practitioners work under the supervision of the Director and/or the Associate Director(s) of the Department and are responsible for performing various basic and advanced respiratory procedures that include, although are not limited to, the following: Intubation, arterial puncture and blood gas analysis, mechanical ventilator management of adult, pediatric and neonatal patients in the following areas: Surgical, Medical, Burn, Pediatric, Neonatal, Cardiac Surgery and Anesthesia Post-Op Intensive Care Units. Incumbent will perform other pertinent respiratory therapy and patient care duties as required.
Qualification
Required: Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy. Certificate of completion from an approved therapist level Respiratory Therapy Program. Registered Respiratory Therapist. 0-1 year experience. Current NYS Therapist License which is required under NYS Law.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree.

Conduct ventilator management.
Draw and analyze blood for arterial blood gases.
Record respiratory progress of patients who are being ventilated mechanically.
Record the respiratory status of all patients in the NICU and Pediatrics.
Assist physicians in ventilating patients who can not sustain their own respiratory function during cardiorespiratory arrests.
Provide sputum induction.
Administer Nitric Oxide Therapy.
Explain the use of respiratory care devices to patients and/or family members and assist in the use thereof.
Make entries in patient's progress record and hospital computer systems.
Clean and decontaminate equipment once removed from patient use.
Provide chest physio-therapy and assist in pulmonary lavage/suctioning.
Demonstrate availability flexibility, to be assigned to work in other areas during times of staff shortages, emergencies, and as deemed necessary due to fluctuations in hospital census.
Required Qualifications:
New York State Respiratory Therapist Licensure.
Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy or graduate of a 2-year AMA approved Respiratory Therapy program.
Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).
BLS (to be obtained within 1-year of employment).
NRP required to work in NICU.
Preferred Qualifications:
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with NPS, NRP, PALS and ACLS preferred.

Requirements
